Thankfully it seems that the days of posting copies or originals of documents to prove ID are behind us. (Some years ago I ranted about it taking 20 days of toing and froing to open an account with Tesco Bank.) Now I'm having my first experience of using facial recognition, with a solicitor sending me a link on my mobile phone, requiring me to put my driving licence on the screen, take a photo and then take a selfie, with AI then trying to match them.
It didn't work for me, and the solicitor wouldn't accept an emailed scan of the licence and a photograph. (What happened to Mark One Eyeball?) So I'm off to a local solicitor to get a copy of the licence verified. I did wonder what sort of comparison could be made with the small, grainy and watermarked image taken seven years ago on the licence; a friend said it looked nothing like me and suggested that I had stuck back my slightly prominent ears for the occasion.
(I admit to having been in a petulant mood with technology as I struggle a little with that on my new Ford Fiesta, not least stop/start, which is notoriously temperamental.)

It turns out that most solicitors no longer verify documents unless you're already a client. One firm local to me did give me the names of a couple of others a few miles away that still do. The firm requiring my ID then conceded that verification from my bank would be acceptable. I tried ringing the bank's general enquiry point but got a message that there were exceptionally long delays in answering queries (at least I wasn't assured that my call was very important to them). I'm lucky in that a small branch 15 minutes' walk from me has yet to be closed, so I'll pop in there and, if they can't verify on the spot, make an appointment.
