I remember trying to read the book when I was about eight to ten years old. It was too complex for me at that age, and I bounced off it. But I went back a few years later and fell in love with the universe, the characters, and the overarching narrative. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that I've read it more than twenty times. It's certainly my most read book. So I was a little nervous about seeing the film (and David Lynch's adaptation in the '80s was rubbish). I have very strong ideas about pretty much everything to do with the book. The chances of a film adaptation meeting my hopes and expectations were slim. It's magnificent! It's not perfect. It's a little too long, and there's two or three scenes they dropped (Lady Fenring and the "greenhouse", the dinner party with the local politicos / merchant class and the "smuggler", and the Feyd Ruatha gladitorial combat on Geidi Prime where he meets Count and Lady Fenring) but that's pretty much it. Other criticisms I have are so minor as to be simply picky. I'll see it again. I'll buy it when it's available on Blu-ray. And I cannot wait for part 2 . If you like sci-fi, or enjoyed the book, I'd thoroughly recommend it. If you don't like sci-fi, or haven't read the book, I think I'd give it a miss. It might be a little impenetrable if you're not familiar with things.

I wouldn't dismiss the earlier version as 'rubbish'. There were some tremendous visual scenes. The film was never finished and shouldn't have been released. The Folio publication is splendidly illustrated by Sam Weber who lifted some of the images from the1984 film e.g. The Arrival of the Navigator'. I'd like to see the new attempt ...where is it ?

I enjoyed it a lot as a teenager and read it 3 or 4 times, but went off most science fiction as I got older. I'm glad it impressed a more dedicated fan so will give the film a go

I'd like to see the new attempt ...where is it ? For me it was in my local Picture House (which likes to pretend it's trendy and independent but is actually owned by Cineworld).

I'm looking forward to seeing it - it's the second 'surprise classic scifi' I didn't know was coming this year after the Apple TV Foundation adaptation (which while unfaithful I'm enjoying - even if It's strongest where it strays from the source material)
Glad to hear dune is well received - I never gave the novel a fair chance past childhood. A passing familiarity with the universe from several of the video games definitely has me intrigued - I may well be the ideal audience!

Having seen the previous movie/TV adaptations and read the book, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest reincarnation. My critisism is that I wish it had been longer! Felt more akin to Dune The Prologue than Dune Part One
