It might read's slightly differently when you have the preceding paragraph with it. It's not really clear if they're now using money from benefits and working (and I believe a certain amount of work is allowed whilst on benefits) or if they're now relying on money from work rather than being on benefits. As has already been pointed out I'm sure this is more about telling "A story" designed to cause some outrage (and probably leading to more sales) rather than any sort of actual news or useful commentary on how some people might lead their lives.

Yes, I took it to mean they don't earn enough (now they are out of the benefits system)...simply because people don't "earn" benefits. Or do they? State pension, jobseekers' allowance, NHS health benefits, some require nominal contributions at least, and I guess people think it's OK for people to claim those even though only a very small fraction of them are net fiscal contributors of any significance at their time of death. All I'm saying is that sponging off the state is a bit subjective. And that Adele's biggest crime appears to be naming one of her spawn Ulysses!

I have no stats to back this up but the feeling I get is that the poorer you are, the more likely you are to have children and more of them. Intelligent and well educated women are more likely to pursue careers at the expense of starting a family. Some (many?) at increasingly older age when it is physically harder to bear children and makes services like IVF more popular but those come with their own risks. This is an appreciation of society that has struck other writers and directors, originally in a 1950s science fiction story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marching_MoronsStill in print! I have a copy- highly recommended! blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/9781515404897 www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/51233
