The first I heard of this was earliesh Saturday evening, when my FB feed popped up a post from a former long standing US work colleague/friend of mine. It read: "At CBI* with a gunman. If I don't get out, remember me. Fight hate"
They were a concerning few hours. It turns out this was someway into the hostage taking, and a point where the gunman had allowed them to call family, and he/they were very pessimistic about the chances of it ending well.
He has since written/shared quite a bit of stuff. With remarkable calm. Much as it appears he and his 2 colleagues showed during the event. I think he has written mainly because he wants to share some lessons with his US friends. He is certain the only reason they managed to get themselves in a position to survive and escape (they escaped rather than were 'released') is because of training they had from the Secure Community Network on what to do in the event of an active shooter.
It is sad that it was a Brit that appears to have been the perpetrator. But only in the US - and of course in particular this is Texas - would he have so easily been able to get hold of firearms. The fact they have had training in what to do in this situation tells you quite a lot. The US and guns: what a bloody mess it is.
*CBI I quickly found out was "Congregation Beth Israel".
