Doing my self assessment tax return
made a type when entering the cost of stock and put £860 instead of £8860.
fortunately I had a good idea of what I was due to pay so i started to backtrack to make sure it was correct and found it, a £1600 difference in my tax bill averted ...
Ad that to my local Auction house changing their fees from 10% plus VAT to 15% plus VAT
so a £100 bid would previously cost £112, now it's £118
still beats the other one I use though they charge VAT on items ( mostly bankruptcy) so they charge 20% VAT, 15% commission, and VAT on the commission So a £100 bid costs £138 ! Wise to that now I know If I want to pay about £100 I don't bid above £70, But I have seen people bidding a few pounds below the marked RRP or example a nice waterproof jacket recently It said RRP £122 and the winning bid was £110

Is making errors on your tax return in some way linked to greedy auction houses increasing their fees? Of course, nothing compels you to use an auction house. If you object to their fees, or object to being outbid by idiots with more money than sense, you can always vote with your feet. Yes, they are greedy merchants, but they probably figure you're only bunging the stuff out on eBay for a tidy profit, so they'll grab an extra slice of that for themselves...

Numpties getting silly-bid-fever is hardly anything new.
It's 8yrs or so since I was looking at garden machinery at a local auctioneer's. Bankrupt stock, new, but no warranty - slightly more expensive than retail with warranty, after you added on fees and vat.
Then, in the times just before the 'vid, looking at ex-council very used machinery. Hammer alone fell higher than I ended up paying for far better condition, seen-working, kit via a local FB group.
Sure, there CAN be some bargains. But you can bet you ain't the only person looking at them...

same on ebay , stuff going for same as new stuff. Recently I watching an item that retailed new for around £25 , it looked well used and went for £28+ post! Why would you pay that?

I sell camera lenses amongst other stuff. Usually in the £35-45 range, and as I often buy stuff untested / sold as seen ( seems a stupid comment on Ebay etc )i get a few damaged / Broken items
I have a contact in the trade and a repair would cost me about £40 on most of these for parts, and a small amount to fit. of course if it's "fungus" affected it needs a full strip and clean, which is time consuming and fiddly.
I regularly sell damaged / Faulty lenses for £10 less than a working one, Now I accept that some may be stripping for parts but I think some are repairing.

I bought most of my golf clubs on ebay. All good quality and at a good price. However, there were a few cases where bidding went to a stupid level, and you wonder if shill bidders were in operation.
