It would have to be a pretty big miscalculation. I suspect the calculations to do it deliberately would be a lot harder. Still worst case, we catch it in a big net and have another go. mm,a big net ....Arctic Rim V111 , can't wait.

Ah, but where do you put the spent fuel? Down a coal mine? Actually the part of Wales I live in has a dense population ( Well some of them are very dense ) and we have a disused coal mine nearby. I don't understand why there is no proposal to extract heat from the water in these mines and pipe it round the area. Ahh I meant the other part where adrianc lives

Our neighbour visited yesterday afternoon, asset rich and cash poor. She is not on the gas mains but is on electricity, but her wood fired boiler chimney was condemned the day before. What to do.
Draught exclude first Damp exclude Insulate Change light bulbs for LED secondary glazing if primary double glazing is s@ tChecked her smart meter which was showing energy consumption off the scale, so turn off lights when you leave a room Get the chimney relined (est £600 for steel system, £2k for concrete system) Store her wood in one of her many barns to dry it out for this and next year rather than leave it in a field
any other ideas

1. Move house. 2. Take out equity release on the house if she really wants to stay and isn't bothered about leaving money to anyone. Time to move on really and enjoy somewhere else i think. It doesn't sound like a place that can work unless you have income.

farmers who don't want to diversify in reality
still if this person didn't have any capital asset and only had her pension (85) what would you be advising?

farmers who don't want to diversify in reality Self-propelled lasagne Equine doesn't count as agricultural when it comes to all the various bits of paperwork. Equity release... Spend it in her lifetime, rather than suffering only to leave it to somebody else.

does she have to buy her wood or does it come for free ? Does her wood fired boiler also supply her heating ? Does she have wood fires: if she does, is she using log burners or open fires (unlikely to be the latter in this day and age, but it was what I was bought up on with parents only changing to using more efficient log burners later). if she has log burners, increase their efficiency by putting thermal current driven fans on top (I've seen this in action and they really do work). .
Keep only the rooms she needs warm - But you'll be on that so no idea why I'm saying it.
Look at usage on washing machine and dishwasher (if she has one): maximise the efficient usage of them. Only boil the right amount in the kettle. As well as insulate in terms of roof space, also minimise draft/insulate under roof tiles (but DO NOT spray foam insulation on the underside of tiles).
Curtains: pull them across when its dark to retain internal heat. Back to drafts: don't forget keyholes if she has doors with locks without covers.
buy a cat: cuddle it.

Don't really have that much to go on, so only a few suggestions: Google "energy saving tips" -- I'd be amazed if you find anything suggested here that isn't already available on t'interweb* -- Some results will zero cost. Some will be low cost. Some will involve varying degrees of capital investment. (Any of these may or may not be relevant to your friend's property and/or circumstance and, as it isn't possible for us to know which are and which aren't, I suspect some won't be inclined to expend time (and energy) on making potentially irrelevant suggestions.) For costlier items, is she / her property eligible for Local Authority grants or funding from other sources? (Again, will be specific to your friend's circumstances including location - and again, Google is your friend.) Consider putting some kind of monitoring in place: 'you can't manage what you don't measure' - it's worthwhile trying to understand how successful each energy saving attempt is as seeing tangible results will often encourage continued good practices. (It's often about do the smart, simple things over the long term that can make an impact, as per below) * eg: ' How to save energy in the kitchen' (amongst others)
