Sounds familiar to me ....
Our local barber has gone to the wall and is being replaced by a 'dog shop'.
Who has money to spend on 'Dog Stuff' ?
The common local splurge is a packet of dried pig ears, usually accompanied by a 6 pack of lager (for the weekend).

We lost one restaurant just before the pandemic
Our two travel agents went (who knew you needed travel to be a travel agent), both stores doing something useful
A bread shop that refused to take cards
A donkey charity
We gained one bread shop that accepted cards
and a second dried goods store (buy by weight not plastic bag)
a second veg shop with added deli counter
A pop up shop offering locally made sheep's cheese 2 days a week
and that is that.
What has changed is the products and services they offer, far far more helpful, including home delivery, internet sales etc and a positive message for all

My wife cuts my and the dogs hair, but always my hair first, just to get her eye back in. Does not want anybody taking the mick out of the dogs for a bad barnet.

Gone but not forgoten
- derelict industrial site
- several green fields
- Clarks shoe shop (now got to travel to Exeter or Taunton to get a decent pair of shoes)
- second hand mobile phone shop
- pub
- amusement arcade
- chinese take away
- massage parlour (allegedly due to local landlord complaining that his takings were down because his regulars were spending too much time elsewhere)
But don't fret as we now have
- Lidl supermarket (replacing the industrial site)
- lots of new houses (replacing the green fields)
- Italian restaurant (replacing the pub)
- pet grooming shop
- nail bar
Rather suprisingly, one of the most resiliant businesses is a Vietnamese noodle bar that was built on the site of a renovated council toilet.

Strangely, we've now got a Vietnamese Poodle Bar; tried one..........taste bloody awful

I haven't really been in town to see, telling in it's own right!
Edit: Local 'corner shops' all seem to be doing OK and the Chinese restaurant down the road is still going. I must have a look, it's mostly a centre off the main road so you can't really see what's going on unless you park and walk in and I haven't been doing that. Mainly using delivery and click and collect.

Lost tesco, still empty, M&S now job centre, Debenhams now mutiple retail outlets, gained pawn shop, savers chemist, tea rooms/cafes. An enrire ancient small shopping centre with icelandin it sold at auction forĀ£325000. Still empty. On a positive note, the new retail park is booming with the usual discounters and fast food joints.
No poodle or noodle bars yet, but a couple of turkish barbers...

I suspect most of what's been killed off can be put into one of two categories...
1. Hospitality 2. Clinging on already, and this was just the final straw...
Who knew high st travel agents were even still a thing?

Who knew high st travel agents were even still a thing? We have a TUI and Hayes in town, and there always appear to be a few people inside booking something. Don't know why as it always works out cheaper for me to book on line.

Happened to bump into the owner of one of the closed shops this morning.
He had been thinking of retiring, but the lockdown and as he admits the availability of loans etc was a factor.
He says that he kept staff on the payroll as long as possible ( Until the end of Furlough ) then did the right thing and paid redundancy. he said he knew 2 of the 3 staff were already working for others.
He says he's been assured by his accountant that as he's liquidated the company he can't be chased for the outstanding CBILS loans
