Is this a 'new' thing that organisations are doing, or is it that I've just not been in the position that I would notice it before ? I seem to be receiving far more "We know that some people....click here to opt out of" messages than I ever noticed getting "Mother's Day messages", which would seem to rather defeat the supposed purpose of the exercise.

I do think that more appear, and what is more hurtful is some of them email you every year with the same question !
Yes I agree the opt out rubs salt in the wound

I think it's been increasing over recent years. The commercialization of all occasions like this irritate me to be honest...Valentine's Day has a special place of ridicule in my heart, for example, but mother's day and everything around it really annoys me including companies who seek to exploit it.

Ah yes. Indeed. Thankfully my partner feels exactly the same. We do however stoop to sometimes buying a card: this year the one I gave said "You'll Do" on the front. But I also remember how I felt on so many occasions in the past when valentine's day arrived and I was not coupled up. I also wonder how difficult this time is for those who have lost their partner: as if birthdays, Xmas etc weren't bad enough.

During the entirety of my school years I received one solitary Valentine's day card. Years later (because I kept it that long) I discovered it had been sent by my parents out of pity because they knew I wanted one

For someone who has just lost a mother or is unable to have a child and become a mother its probably better to get the message once and cancel rather then emails every couple of hours about the latest card or gift idea

It's a pity they don't offer a blanket opt-out for all cheesy schmaltz.
