I've just been reading an article on investing for income.
At one point the article days "from as little as £10 a day"
£10 a day, £300 a month, for pity's sake live in the real world
Many people are just managing, and it's certainly not within reach of the many on any form of benefits.
As an example my Partner has just had a new quote for Gas and Electricity
currently she pays Electricity 17.4p Plus 24p Standing charge, gas 2.89p and 26P standing charge new quote is Electricity 28.29p Plus 48.88p Standing charge, gas 7.43p and 27.22P standing charge
62% rise in electricity unit price plus an extra £90 a year in standing charge Gas price 157% increase in gas, this means her electric bill will go from £720 to £1200 her gas bill goes from £380 a year to £835. basically a £40 a month increase in both her gas and electricity bill but her pension will only go up £5.55 a week or £24 a month so just on utilities she will be £56 a month worse off without an extra £6 a month in council tax etc.
These people suggesting Joe Average can find £300 a month to start saving are living in some sort of fantasy land.

... and we already know i personally think that gas and electric will be going up on 1st October just before winter so even those totals for the year ahead are much too low in terms of budgeting IMHO.
It is not completely unrealistic to assume her gas tariff will double again from 1st Oct for example.
If i were her i would be crunching some numbers around possible higher unit costs from 1st October and over winter when the heating will be on.

OK That is a very low fixed rate. I assume for existing customers. Which supplier is that?

Running a ice car in Morzine. 2.15 euros here for a litre of fuel!! Doesnt seem to stop the big bmw owners though. Interesting few of the restaurants or our hotel take cards.... cash only. Maybe its unrealistic to ask people to pay tax these days. Same when I was in Spain a while back.

The higher the cost of energy the sooner it will be sensible to fit insulation

Loyal Octopus 12M Fixed February 2022 v1
although it says 12 month her quote is to April 2024 ( We can argue that if the say its only 12 months next year )
even if it only lasts 12 months its a heck of a lot cheaper than your mum was offered

I spoke to Octopus. Nothing like that available now since the prices went up. Lucky your renewal was earlier. Even for the earlier tariff you got my mums postcode is higher. Loyal Octopus 12M Fixed February 2022 v1 Electricity Unit rate: 36.33 p/kWh Standing charge: 24.01 p/day Gas Unit rate: 9.61 p/kWh Standing charge: 26.1 p/day

ouch that Gas is crippling
over twice what I'm paying and I only renewed in late September
that will make 10,000 kWh of gas £1200 a year and 3000 kWh of electricity £1350
So over £200 a month or 1/4 of average State Pension Another £100 for council tax Leaves about £500 a month for someone on just the state pension Take off £20 for a landline, £20 for water, £12 for TV Licence
leaves £450 for rent, food, clothes, cleaning materials, replacement of worn out white goods, house/contents and personal insurance.
I've left holidays and entertainment off the list because they wont be able to afford to do that. personally its a crying shame that people who have worked hard all their lives wont even be able to afford to go to the pub for a pie and a pint.
