Perhaps therein lies the problem when I was younger nicknames were given for various reasons Chalky had a surname of White Dusty surname Miller Inky surname blackI was at school with a bloke called Leonard Inkster. He quickly got renamed Lenny L'Encre (well, it was a Grammar...), a name that's still in use 50 years later! Wow! Mine was a grammar but we were never that sophisticated. Our level was a maths teacher called Mr Gum, who we all referred to as EEBARR

Well said bracknellboy. Also, ginger people. What the hell is that all about. An attractive hair coloring (if we're scoring then I'd suggest below brunette but definitely above blonde) yet an absolute magnet for low-level abuse and bullying. Never understood it. That said, I've definitely used the phrase 'odious little man' about Mark Francois before so will more thoughtful in future.

Another issue is size
too often I hear people excusing weight with "its in my genes" "I eat hardly anything" etc
Some of it has to be what we eat and what we do.
in the 70s at a Grammar school most of us would be described as thin today (I was 4 & 1/2 stone and 4 ft 6 at 11) but we had lots of PE and excuses weren't allowed, In the holidays I walked and cycled miles. Crisps were a treat not an everyday thing.
Only time I had fast food was the Golden egg or little chef on the way to holidays etc,
Today they call at greggs on the way to school and home they sit and play games all day and rarely go out. meals are often takeaways 3-4 nights a week.
and we wonder why they are so much bigger

I was the epitome of a "copper knob" and yet strangely I never once (honestly) got stick for being a Ginge (to be fair I wasn't keen on the colour myself). It may have been something to do with the fact that I was always rather "large" for my age, both in height and girth. Perhaps I was being called "big fat ginge" out of earshot, but I never got to hear it. Oh and before some wag on here comes up with it, no I'm not and have never been deaf!

We had a Bates who everyone called Master, but the less said about that the better.

I think you and Chuck Norris are probably in the minority, though.

I grew up in a multi-racial multi-religion school where white anglo-saxons were roughly 45% and a majority of the kids tended to be a bit weird anyway. The idea of picking on a ginger just seemed superfluous.
B&W, if only :-)

When I grew up I never heard anyone talking about "gingers" is it a post 80s thing for kids? Probably, because prior to that it meant something quite different, as my Cockney dad would have told you. He knew all his rhyming slang, although I never heard him use that particular one.

We had a German teacher whose nickname was 'Turd'.
I never asked, and I never wanted to know.
