When P & O 'sacked' 800 employees the Unions complained bitterly that if the company had liaised with them they could have worked together to reach a mutually acceptable outcome. When Network Rail asked the Unions to work with them regarding 2,500 proposed job cuts the union threatened to ballot 40,000 rail workers for strike action which (they say) would bring the country to a standstill.
I can understand what P & O meant when they said there was no point trying to liaise with the Unions.

Perhaps the Unions are as a whole peed off with what P&O did and the complete lack of action from the government, even after admitting he broke the law the CEO hasn't been charged.
personally I think the unions are taking a position and that negotiations will happen if both sides are prepared to compromise.
