No joined up thinking in any council. Our crowd had around 25 pallets(yes pallets) of lateral flow test kits. They suddenly dissapeared. Hopefully not to landfill.

One thing that always got me was the stupidity of 1 year budgets where 9/10 times if it is underspent the budget reduced the following year. you would end up with money effectively being wasted in March so there was nothing left at the end of the year. And little ability to do major projects that ran over the end of a financial year

A brave fellow, the Man in charge of highways in Shropshire , turned up at our village hall to assauge the pothole rioters.
He maintained that 89% of the entire council budget was used for Adult /Children Social Care , which was an eyeopener.
However the Highways budget had an extra 27million left this year and they were ready to spend out on the main road out of the village , that had suffered a 200 yard landslip 2 years ago. (Some wag had tied 2 years balloons to the traffic lights ,that were always out of order.)
He all comforted us with the news that however duff our system,it was better than next one south (Herefordshire).
And so they did . Road closed for 3 weeks and final tarspraying the lot as well, finishedyesterday. (counted 38 20mph skid restriction signs the five mile length too).

Scottish government announce a 3.5 billion black hole in finances. Guessing ferries, baby boxes and a load of other expensive promises are coming home to roost. Never mind, just tax people who actually work more.

Like get councils to charge people to park at work, tourist tax increases, cut public services more whilst awarding scotrail workers double what council staff are offered 2 months after going back to public ownership. The only reasonable suggestion was get commercially aware staff to run procurement!! they should be doing that already!

I know of examples in the NHS where for example Files, Notepads etc are 5-10 times the price that I can buy identical items for on the high street. I also remember in my Local Authority days a member of Admin in another department bragging how he'd saved £1 on a box of pens by ringing round alternative suppliers ( In the days before Online ordering ), it was being quoted as a great example until the IT manager pointed out that that the morning he'd spent on the phone, let alone the cost of calls far outweighed the savings. Then he pointed out that cost of setting up a new supplier on the IT systems with the requirements to get Payment address, VAT ref etc was also more than £1.

Tax is the price for living in a civilised society. Great point; so why aren't we living in one then??? Well, I'm going to take a stab at a combo of "pandering to voters who know the price of everything and the value of nothing" and "politicians who'd rather see money go to their friends".

Roundabouts being replaced with traffic lights is my bug bear. One near me used to work well as a roundabout so the council decided to give £2.7M (yes that much on a dual carriageway meeting a single carriageway road) to Siemens to create traffic jams there and allegedly make it safer. Safer still would be to ban driving. Replacing most roundabouts is a waste of money IMO.

By my count, there are at least 4 that have been replaced in the last few years. One of them I would say is an improvement, 1 possibly so. The others .....

Yes I had the coral reef in mind but there are others and its not just BFC by any means. I agree there are probably some good calls being made but when you factor in the cost I wonder.....
