Apart from not being sure whether the upper house should exist at all in its current form, I can't put my finger on why I find this application from Martin Lewis slightly distasteful. I suppose its an aspirational step that many of us would love if it were bestowed upon us but can't quite square that with making your own application. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61869649

The ideal sinecure. It would therefore be rather remiss of the country's favourite money making schemer if he DIDN'T chance his arm by self-nominating I'm just rather surprised he hasn't included the idea on his regular MSE email, imploring everyone to make use of this highly rewarding trick.

I didn't realise you could just apply! It seem that they look for people who could contribute and I guess as a consumer 'champion' and with quite a lot of knowledge about personal finances he might not be such a bad choice. We could all badger him about P2P losses.

The founder of the Money Saving Expert website told the BBC's Nick Robinson he had been "honest" about not having enough time to attend many sittings
So what was the point of him applying? Turn up, claim your £160 daily allowance and then go straight home?

well exactly. It is thinking like that that has made him the man he is today. It will probably be a higher attendance than half of them actually have

Listen to the actual interview. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0018v5g/political-thinking-with-nick-robinson-21-the-martin-lewis-oneThe bit about the HoL starts at 19m15s. "...most of the time, the Lords sits about 3 to 10 on a Mon-Tue-Wed... most importantly I have a 9yo daughter, and until she's 13 my most important job from 6.30 until 8 at night is to be with her... and so I would see my role as learning for 3-5 years with limited input and then gradually for the next 5-10 years committing more and more time to the HoL if I became a cross-bench peer..."Seems a very sensible attitude to me. Given Lewis is reputedly worth £120m+, I can't see him making that big a deal of £160/day, can you?

Given Lewis is reputedly worth £120m+, I can't see him making that big a deal of £160/day, can you? On the one hand he wants to prioritise hanging out with his daughter - which he has the right to, of course. On the other hand he wants a job with an employer that meets at the exact times he wants to spend with his daughter. The two don't add up. The UK has become an insane place, where employees feel they have the right to work whenever they want, from wherever they want... and, in the case of Mr Lewis, even if they don't want to work, they complain if an employer chooses not to hire them. If Mr Lewis wants to "learn" about how things work in the House of Lords for "3-5 years" while his priority is playing tiddlywinks with his daughter, he could have offered to waive his £160/day salary during that period. But he didn't do that because pocketing money for himself and his disciplines through every means possible is his entire raison d'etre.

You do know that members of the HoL only get paid for the days they turn up, right? www.parliament.uk/globalassets/documents/lords-finance-office/2021-22/financial-support-for-members-briefing-note-2021-22.pdfIt's £320 (income-tax free!), btw - they can choose to claim £160 or £0. Question for you - do you think Lewis would be a better addition to the HoL than, say, a failed civil servant who the PM wanted to appoint as a minister but was not an MP?
