A friend of mine is flapping that when his block of flats is turned over to Digital Voice (ie. VoIP), their bandwidth might be insufficient, and whereas a conversation over good old POTS was always crystal clear, with no discernible packet loss in speech, he's concerned that being forced onto VoIP will degrade his experience. Does each flat have fibre to it?

Does each flat have fibre to it? No. It's a thorny issue because he knows they'll need it, but many residents are elderly, resistant to change and unhappy with the sight of cables running up the exterior, and there's no obvious interior conduit. He somehow has to win over the residents committee and sees the whole thing as a giant pain in the posterior.

Fancy a new investment opportunity? How about converting the old Phones with the a “modern” lead.
😅 It’s funny the guy in the video testing the old phones with a mobile in a place where mobile signal coverage is poor. Apparently, without the proper restoration, the phone could “slow down” the internet at home, my guess his line has not gone “digital” yet.
It probably won’t happen if the phone is connected to the digital hub.

I s'pose it could be fibre to the building - I'm not familiar with how they work with flats, tbh. There certainly will be dry risers inside the building for services.

Openreach has a target for FTTP installation to reach 85% or 25 million premises all over the UK by December 2026.
No idea what would be like to be left behind.

I suspect the other 15% will include those that are well served by other providers in city centres - but also the "digital left behinds" way out in the boonies. Satellite is still likely to be their best route.

of course without a power source, in the event of a power cut they are useless as are the ones that are cordless. The good old fashioned one work best then.

Personally its great news for me. We still run on copper wire , 3 miles from exchange resulting in 2mb/sec. Scot government keep moving the deadline for us all to be digital. Mse best broadband deal is shell at £14 a month. I pay £26 for poor service and a fraction of the speed. Sky want £37 in December. No idea what we will do as I'm reluctant to pay more for less. Never use our landline as it mostly sales calls and friends and family have our mobile numbers anyway.

There was an article in Saturday's The Times or the Sunday Times (typically I can't locate it now) about there being too many altnets in the market and if both BT and another big player were to meet their targets they would have to supply millions more homes than there actually are. The fear was expressed that some smaller players might collapse, leaving people without any Internet.

Well, having praised VOIP - I just tried to call a reasonably common 0808 number (to Eon) and found Sipgate couldn't handle it. Number works from mobiles but not from my landline.
Pretty annoying but presumably these gremlins will be resolved in time...

Has anyone watched “the last ship”?
We may need radio in the unlikely scenario
