A local drapery store, with a fair number of branches started a sale in Early December to clear stock for new lines coming in January. Staff became concerned as the stores became depleted of stock and nothing was in the warehouse but the owners insisted they had a plan.
on the 23rd December staff were emailed and told the business was going into liquidation, some store were open and when managers phoned head office they were told close in the next hour. Some staff of course have no access to email whilst at work or at all.
Staff were told they would be paid until the 24th December and any holiday pay accrued also paid, they have been told to consult the redundancy service about redundancy pay.
one of my neighbours sisters managed a branch and asked about the keys after closing the branch, and was told she should drive to Cardiff at her own expense and in her time to return the keys. She has told them, she will keep they keys and if they want them collect them.
I know businesses go into liquidation but 2 days before Christmas is particularly hard on staff, although I think a lot suspected something was amiss.
