So much for a slimmed down coronation event. Given the struggles so many have faced over the last 12-18 months with more to come, plus all the goings on with the Windsors, and with this no longer being anything to do with QEII, will this add to negative perceptions of the monarchy and be the straw that breaks popular support ? 3 day coronation event

Charles did just give a chunk of money to the government.
I think people always like an excuse to celebrate, a bit of cheer after all the bad news. Why not a coronation? May also be good for tourism.

the 'silent majority'? Quick once-around in the Highgrove staff canteen? Speaking of which... Buck House and Windsor are official. Liz had Balmoral and Sandringham. They've gone to Chuck, who's also got Highgrove. What happened with the QM's various gaffs?

All went to Liz but then dolled out Clarence House to Charles as official PoW London pad & presumably now Willy Birkhill to Charles Royal Lodge Windsor is Andys official country pile Glamis castle belongs to Earl of Strathmore

Good ,looking forward to it . I am a royalist and pleased to see that they are carrying on the tradition of totally dysfunctional dotty families with robes ,crowns and marching soldiers.
Just finished Andrew Roberts: 'George 3 ',which I would recommend . Seems he was a good egg after all and it was not the porphyria of Alan Bennet's version, but depression due to the rigours of the job ,family ,the universe and all that . Having read about it and the dreadful state of Parliaments et all I'm not in the least surprised . Def. a goodread if your are interested in the 18th century (I am).

This is the first coronation since 1953. To put things in perspective, it will probably cost about 0.0001% of the money that has been spent on benefit handouts etc. in the last 70 years.
Would you rather the money was gifted to people who chose not to work and will spend it on getting their necks tattooed with cartoons of their favourite Love Island stars?

Who would chose not to work for £300 a month? My understanding of benefit "handouts" is that most of it goes on disabled, pensioners etc. There's a 7 year old at my son's school. She clearly has no limbs. I feel bad every time I see her and certainly glad her parents will be able to claim DLA or whatever on her behalf and further glad she gets an assistant at school to help her out. I think its right we have a state that acts as a kind of insurance - otherwise we'd be like <name your favourite 3rd world country here>

not worried, it will bring income to our tourism industry for the next five years, all a good solid return.
I have no interest in watching it happen.

I always understood the coronation to be much more a CofE thing, rather than run by the monarch himself, and so essentially up to the church rather than Charles to 'slim it down'.
Obviously a lot has changed since the last one, but short of Charles declining to be supreme governor of the church it seems likely to remain that way

I'm no monarchist so take this with a pinch of salt but in my opinion the Queen clung desperately to her title when she could have quietly stepped down 30 years ago. (That's what they do on the Continent after all) That at least would have allowed the ascension of Prince [cough!, sorry, "King"] Charles to be orderly, dignified, respectful and given the old sausage something to do besides lecturing us all for the last three decades on things of which he knew absolutely nothing. By now he would be a likeable chump and his prematurely balding princely son would have more public image and be preparing (in about 5 or 10 years) for the next succession. It's a job, people ... get over it, and get on opening supermarkets already.
[But no, Lizzy just had to spoil it all and 'go for the record' of outlasting Vicky]

We the people wanted to see the spectacle of the grand national It might be entertaining to watch them running round in circles and jumping hedges, true.
