we have hit a problem
Many places don't take credit cards ( not even American Express )
then we hit a problem with debit cards
Visa is not accepted in most places nor is mastercard
Maestro is preferred I and yes I know Mastercard own Maestro
any ideas who does a prepay maestro card

Mastercard are phasing Maestro out including in Netherlands so I would suspect a Mastercard debit will be fine. www.betaalvereniging.nl/betaalproducten-en-diensten/pinnen/project-dca/

interesting because on of the attendees was over there a few weeks ago, and one chain store doesn't accept other than Maestro cards ( not even cash).
they lady that went over said not having maestro was a nightmare, she ended up borrowing her daughters card ( shes live in the Netherlands ) then transferring funds over,

Take a wadge of euros and divide them between you . Book accomodation in advance. I rarely use cards abroad . The only mega payout is fuel and Holland is very flat . You could do the whole trip on one fill. I drove round from the Hook to the top of Denmark and back on one tank of an elderly Volvo. Very flat.

I have a sibling that has spent much of the summer in NL; I think he is still there although might be back in BE (they live out there). Anyway, I asked him about this dilemma of cards in NL. This is his response: "I use maestro/Mastercard but most places take most major debit cards. Much improved post COVID"EDIT: That's a Starling Maestro debit card.

As for NL, I've been there a few times over the years and never had a problem with Visa. Maybe I went to the wrong places....

The Dutch have a thing about credit, the word for credit being the same as guilt...

I don't recall any difficulty using credit cards (Mastercard or Visa) as a tourist in NL (most recently 4 years ago).
I generally use my debit card only to get cash from ATMs. I rarely use it in shops (particularly abroad, because I get a better deal on foreign transactions with one of my credit cards), so I was unaware of the historical issue. It sounds like it's now been fixed, but it's always a good idea to carry some cash just in case.

Surely, with the right cards, people can withdraw cash from ATM supporting Cirrus / Plus System network. Unless those shops won’t take cash.

The Dutch have a thing about credit, the word for credit being the same as guilt... I think that's German actually... A lot of crossover between the two languages. Google translate suggests that "credit" in Dutch is "krediet", while "guilt" is "schuld" - one of the other translations of that is "debt".

I knew about the crossover, I didn't know about the other translation of schuld as debt, so thanks for the correction.
