I haven't posted for a while. Normally we process 20-40 goods movements a month to and from EU destinations. So far we have not solved the problems with the paperwork to make any movements at all. My hair has gone white with the strain. Have you not been driving a lorry around Whitehall? At last, evidence that this is not just me who can't make the system work. This wine import er is describing exactly the problem, we can't make the CHIEF import clearing system work. It just sends error codes because some mysterious combination of fields need to be filled in. If you change the field you think the problem is, a deluge of new error messages arrives. If frustration was a substance, it would be oozing from under my fingernails now. www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jan/18/a-multiple-pile-up-in-the-fog-wine-agents-fury-at-brexit-red-tape#_=_Thing is, there are 4000+ error codes, and the explanations usually don't make sense or give enough information. And HMRC are hiding behind an email address where they offer to reply in 5 days. www.gov.uk/government/collections/chief-error-codesAll our operations are suspended. I thought we had done everything to be ready, but we can't be ready for the HMRC computer not to be fit for purpose.

Reminded me a bit of the Kapp Putsch, where the putschists arrived in the Reichstag when there was nobody there, claimed they were now in charge and made speeches to each other. But the civil service was on holiday and so they were standing in the centre of power, but could not grasp the leavers of power. Similar to the goon sitting in the Senate Speaker's chair. And now what?
Also reminded me of a cow in a Martin Amis novel. It runs towards the protagonists, who are trying to have a picnic and frightens them into jumping over a fence. But the cow has run towards them without any particular objective in mind and when it arrives it stops, because it has come to the end of its idea.

Unfortunately for me another rule change is going to stop my activities or make me a smuggler. I've been giving away gifts of proper cheddar and stilton to all and sundry acquaintances for years now, as these are either not well known in West Flanders and French Flanders, or misunderstood as the supermarket rubber versions here are totally awful. Plus I need my fridge to be full of both.
Checks when entering the EU
When arriving in the EU you may have to undergo official controls by the authorities. If you are carrying any meat or dairy products, which you have not declared they will be confiscated and destroyed, you may also be fined or face criminal prosecution.
If you declare your dairy goods and don't have some sort of certificate, they will be taken away for examination i.e. you won't see them again.
I can tell you this, they'd better have a cheese trained sniffer dog, because I'm not going along with this.
Fortunately, marmite and Branstons were not subjected to sanctions.

Those border officials have got a right cheek.
Still trying to rearrange the visit of the Belgian orchestra. In addition to a £95 visa, each member has to go to Brussels to get a visa. But as was being re-arranged for 2022, an impossible condition will have kicked in which puts an end to the project. Only 8/52 members have a passport.
After September 2021, the UK will no longer recognise the EU Identity card as a valid travel document. According to VisitBritain, about half of tourist visits to the UK are EU citizens. But in the EU, 40% or fewer, varying by country, have passports. This is because passports cost €150 ish, while the ID card everyone has allows free travel within the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so few people bother to get a passport. So post virus, I wouldn't expect any revival of the tourism industry helping pick up the economy as that has been well and truly Priti'd.

I must say that it was that speech gave me such a jolt that I decided I had to get my house in order and start applying for things. I'm not sure about the new regulations. Can a UK citizen only visit the EU for a total of 90 days regardless of whether you move from country to country? What is the consequences if you try to check out at 91 days? And if you have a residence permit for one EU country, do you need to return to that country every 90 days if you have a UK passport only? Logically, if you have residence in s Schengen country, nobody is checking how long you are staying in another Schengen country so I expect that @bracknell's relatives have made a smart move.

That's very nice of you - I'd suggest I buy you a beer. Except I'm stuck in Belgium. And the pubs are closed. And it has to be said, neither of these are related to leaving the EU. Narrow escape though - I'd probably bore you to sleep with my embittered ramblings! And don't bring up the historic role of the Camerons! These scars will never be healed etc! Hail the new Turkey deal! and my brother and sister-in-law have had to take up Belgian residency to avoid the new constraints/issues thrown up for brits in the EU. I had residency for a while now, but I want the option to move to another EU country, possibly France, in future. So I managed to squeak Belgian nationality (dual nationality) to keep that option open. Not because I'm not patriotic or hate Britain though. It's partly business, partly having married an EU person. “if you believe you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere.” - Mein Kampf. Oh sorry no, that was Theresa May, July 2017

On the day that the UK announces that we have rolled over the EU treaty with Turkey... Well, the UK used to be in a customs union with Turkey, with visa-free travel. So I guess it's not been totally rolled over... That's a bit negative. I got told off.

I did offer that a few posts ago. The answer is that I am facing the consequences a bit more fully than most. I have a divided family and divided businesses across this new border. Trying to sort everyone out and bring pushed into decisions we never wanted to make is a poisonous affair. This thread is about the logistics of Brexit which I'm well placed to talk about. Let me let off steam sometimes about what got me into this mess. Yeah, sorry if I came over a bit shouty (real word?). I do sympathise with you and others who are caught up in the middle of this, especially if it's split your family; that must be hard. But we only have a chance of bringing things back together if we all do what we can to make a success of what, I admit, feels an uncertain future. What I do know is that the scars will NEVER be healed if we keep re-running the old debates and arguments. I wish you every success in your future business, and hope you can bring your family back together. That's very nice of you - I'd suggest I buy you a beer. Except I'm stuck in Belgium. On the day that the UK announces that we have rolled over the EU treaty with Turkey, what better moment is there to revisit the 2016 Andrew Marr interview with Penny Mordaunt, looking square at the camera and lying her ars* off in the cause of misleading a few more people into voting for Brexit? 'UK can't stop Turkey joining EU' says Penny Mordaunt - BBC NewsFor God's sake man; let it go!!! I voted to remain but I accepted things long ago. We've really ALL got no option but to look forward and use this deal as a platform and make the best of every opportunity that lies ahead. We've absolutely got to stop constantly harking back to a past that is now truly gone; it really serves no useful purpose. I did offer that a few posts ago. My gal and her orchestra were due to visit the UK and do concerts in Southwark Cathedral, Guards Chapel etc >50 musicians plus partners, several nights booked into hotels. before Covid put the kybosh on it. Now to reschedule this, the musicians need work visas and have to declare their instruments as 'tools of trade'. faroutmagazine.co.uk/brexit-musicians-visa-petition/Please sign:- petition.parliament.uk/petitions/563294www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/dec/29/uk-performers-raise-alarm-as-brexit-deal-threatens-eu-touringLooks like a visa is £95/person, which is going to be more than 4 grand for the orchestra, is too much for their budget, given the cost of transporting a full orchestra's gear. Furthermore each of them would "need to book an appointment at a visa application centre to prove your identity and provide your documents.
Allow time to attend your appointment, as the visa application centre could be in another country.
The visa application centre may keep your passport and documents while processing your application."
