Equifax has leaked data/been hacked. P2P sites ask for a lot of ID, including core ID facts and uploads of core ID documents for money laundering and, I presume, for tax reasons (for or not for an ISA). I don't like the idea of these core ID document copies being stored. Does anyone know what the policy/legislation is? Does anyone else have concerns about P2P data security? What if a P2P site used personal attributes for proof of ID which had been hacked elsewhere? There's increasing use of text messages to validate financial transactions, for example. www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-41737241 (bit late) www.equifax.co.uk/incidentI've searched the forum for equifax, data safety, and hacked. I haven't searched for 'security' for obvious reasons, but not found a similar thread.

I have no confidence in any security on the internet.
I have a friend who has won awards for internet security and he only ever uses Virtual Private Networks for everything he does.

I think it is wise not to trust any form of internet security. There is also the unfortunate overlay, as we have seen with Uber recently, that there is an inherent tendency to cover up to avoid a loss of public confidence in any platform. So, if a P2P platform’s security was compromised then, even if the platform discovered it, there would be a (short-term, at least) incentive to cover it up.
In short, trust none of these jokers.

Has anyone else received the Equifax "sorry" letter in the last few weeks? "I'm sorry to let you know ... blah blah ..." It offers all sorts of free "solutions" including webmonitoring for use of details etc.

Yep, me too - for what little good it might do, I took them up on all their "free" offers - they already have all my details, and the damage is already done.
I hope the irony is not lost on equifax; a company that uses the threat of identity theft to scare customers into signing up, then goes and facilitates exactly that.

Yes, I, my husband and two of my sons got the letter a few weeks' ago. Didn't take up their offer as decided (hoped) not too much info at risk.

Me too - online registration for web protect didn't work so had to phone them up and they sorted it (hadn't run a credit report in a while so it seemed worth it just to check).

I have unique email addresses for each platform
Assetz were the first to lose control (as evidenced by my getting the same spam to both old and new special AC addresses at the same time). They claim it can't be possible and nobody else suffered the same problem (and they did say they actually have a few dummy addresses so they would know)
6 weeks ago Money and Co. Same thing. Horlix herself said it couldn't happen but she would ask head computer honcho to report; I'm still waiting
And just yesterday Lendinvest. I've told them, so far no reply.

Same here from Equifax. And due to a minor error in the data, it appears Equifax may have got my data from Funding Circle. Do FC use them to vet investors?

And , may I say, a good approach to security. I think I may well mirror that. It will make reading the email account list on the iPad impossible, though.

Of course it could be your email provider that is leaking and not the platforms, just a thought. I too had the Equifax letter. Email, DOB and phone numbers leaked so seems sensible to be taking their services for the free 2 year period.

Just autoforward all the incoming emails to your main email-adress, e.g.: use: platformabc@yourdomain.com platformxyz@yourdomain.com platformzzz@yourdomain.com and forward to yourrealemailaddress@yourdomain.com You only would need to work manually when you want to send an outgoing email to the platform.

I also use unique email addresses. It's often a real eye-opener. I've had major organisations like banks leak my email address, confirmed by others who experienced the same. Information commissioner won't act as "not strong enough evidence". In some cases it seems to be due to the bank (etc) passing a subset of customer details to marketing companies who leak like a sieve.

The equifax letter was a masterpiece in Neurolinguist programming and nudge theory. Loads of fear, everyone is doing it, if you don't want to use us morons use others, it will be free for only a limited time. I have never had to have a "credit rating" yet and hope I never do. They had only one thing to do right and they F@@ ed it up. Close the business down I say, as for paying the senior people those silly pay packets.... Yeesch. Try watching the youtubes of the senate hearing with the MD, he knows nothing, not his job, don't be silly why should I be responsible etc.... This would be like blaming the banks for making transactional errors or lending badly... See also NRA support increasing after every mass killing
