Over the last few days I've found that when accessing a thread as many as 6 occurrences of the page are stored in my history. This means that to navigate back, I have to press the back button 6 times which is becoming a bit of a pain. I have googled the issue and some people have found it is linked to add ons (not in my case as the problem persists in safe mode). Other browsers seem to work OK and so far I have only encountered it on the P2P indie forum. support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1122462The above seems to indicate that it is a site specific problem so does anyone know what may have changed on this site on Monday that may have caused this situation in Firefox?

I can't answer your question specifically, but have you recently updated Firefox to 57.0 or later ? Quite a lot of things have been affected by this major release ... if you haven't done so yet might be worth trying it now.
The core problem is a lot of websites include code that renders the page differently depending on the browser ... with the release of a new browser (which is essentially what Firefox 57 is) there will be webpages that work fine on older Firefox versions but not newer and vice versa.

I use Firefox. I did not have this problem before today, but I do now. I have just updated to version 57.0.2 (64 bit) from a previous version of 57.0.
It took me 4 hits of the back button to navigate backwards from this page, but only one hit of the forward button to get me back to this page from the page that I (eventually) navigated back to. Some other pages of this forum won't let me navigate backwards at all.
In case relevant, it may be worth noting that I have the Kaspersky Protection add-on enabled (v 5.0.141.16d), but no other add-ons.
Hopefully it will get sorted soon.

I don't see multiple instances of pages in my history but I do have a misbehaving back button (sounds painful).

Thanks for the replies. It's at least comforting to know that I'm not the only person suffering the issue. Like pikestaff ,I'm on 64.0.2 64 bit which I believe updated about a week ago so if my memory serves me correctly (and there's no guarantee of that) I must have had a few days without the problem. As I said in my original post, I have tried running in safe mode so the issue is not with an add on. Pikestaff, when I say it's in my history, I'm referring to the back button history, not firefox history which as you say, seems to display the correct page history. It can be seen by right clicking on the back button. When I click back, you see the progress through these multiple pages from here. I will keep digging.

I'm seeing the same as you, and confirm that firefox safe mode makes no difference which would appear to rule out add-ons. Having said that, I'd not completely rule out the possibility that Kaspersky is interfering in some way with the communication between the browser and the forum even when the add-on is not running. Do you have Kaspersky installed?

Do you have Kaspersky installed? No I don't but have just discovered that it seems to be linked to the ads. I have just installed adblocker plus and that seems to have fixed the problem. I'm guessing that each ad somehow creates a new page ID.

I've had adblocker plus on my PC before and found that several sites objected to it. Unfortunately a few still objected even after I'd whitelisted them so that they could show me ads. For now I will work round the issue and hope it gets fixed.

I'm guessing that each ad somehow creates a new page ID. FF 58.0b10 x64 installed although the back button 'delay' started with FF57.00. Enabling adblocker on the ProBroards site 'sorts' the problem. I'm not convinced this is strictly a FF problem as I have adblocker disabled on some other sites that run ads and there is no problem with them. So it could be the latest FF coding or current Proboards coding. Irrespective it's annoying and the side ads on ProBoards are acceptable to myself especially as it indirectly supports the forum. However the delay in the back button is not acceptable so for now ads are blocked. Out of interest, has anyone reported this to ProBoards as it cannot just affect this forum.

I actually found the ads at best useful, at worst, unobtrusive so was also happy with them. Now they're disabled I keep getting a prompt ( once per session) from proboards to disable the adblocker or sign up for premium services . At least it has a "wait until next time" button so I can skip it. Doing this once per session is still better than probably an extra 50 or so clicks of the mouse button to overcome the back button issue per session.

It works very seamlessly for me.

One can reduce the nuisance by press and holding on the back icon (<-) top left on the screen, a list of previous pages visited will drop down, so you can skip the multiple instances of the same page (on those sites which have useful page titles)

I suspect either a recent WIN10 and/or Firefox update brought this problem. Disabling/removing Adblock, AdblockPlus, uBlock, or Ghostery proved ineffective, so did disabling Kaspersky Protection. Thank you ribs for working out and bringing the solution to the forum.
