Student accommodation - eyesores?

Students have very few options wrt accommodation. The rents for college controlled rooms are higher than they need to be because the college's know students are getting loans and they have no knowledge locally or experience of letting a property so they will just pay up.
For what my daughter is paying for a room and shared facilities she could get a 3 bed house locally and use the rent nh for a mortgage. Shame she is doing a course that means she is going out and returning from placement at stupid o clock making security an issue.
Worse still is the maximum fee for tuition with no opportunity for students to present arguements in order to get a refund for poor service.
