I stood on the banks of the Marne this week. 100 years ago nearly 500k died or were wounded in the First Battle of the Marne. Today, on the outskirts of Meaux stands a memorial to it. Rolling countryside, quite towns and blue sky. One can't imagine the horror of the Trenches.
Driving down we passed names such as Arras, Mons, Ypres and Cambrai. If you have never stood in a war cemetery then you can never know how words fail.
I'm so lucky to do what I do for a living. I've felt so humble to visit those places this week. As an ex-soldier who never saw action, I can only imagine what those people felt. My great grandfathers fought in that war, two of them survived the Somme.
I hope the world never forgets.

I know it sounds corny but what AH said puts everything into perspective about what's really important in life & death. And it certainly isn't all about money!

Over the last year or so my travelling has taken me to Ypres, Aushwitz, Normandy & Phnom Penh.
Looking around the globe today we have the Ukraine, Israel/ Palestine and other ongoing wars.
The only certainty in life (besides taxes) seems to be man's inhumanity to man.
