This is my employer: For example, you think it would be a great idea for a company to start a funding business such as Fundable.net for a funding business. What would be the drawbacks on piggy backing on Fundable.com name and what would the advantages be?
There are not many domains out there so, I would like to see what my clients options would be. Maybe I need to hire a Domain Broker.

It used to be a sign of cluelessness -- to put a company on a .net domain. This is because .net was for internet infrastructure. E.g. customers of Demon Internet were "blah.demon.co.uk", but the ISP itself used "demon.net" for its own machines. Then some trendy marketing types came along and just said ".net sounds cool and internetsy" and so stuck it on anything The rules have got a bit lax since, and since the recent opening up of everything from .kitchen to .sink ... I don't think the genie will be going back in the bottle any time soon. If you can get it past the registrars (e.g. Nominet/RIPE) then it's probably going to be ok.

If not, you need to be aware that the owners of Fundable.com could acuse the owners of Fundable.net of cybersquatting / impersonation etc. (And the precursor of this forum was effectively accused by FC of cybersquatting ! ) If "Fundable.com" is registered as a trademark either currently or any time in the future, the owners of Fundable.net would come under intense pressure to surrender the .net / .org equivalents. Yes, compensation would be paid, but it would be insuffceint compared to the impact on Fundable.net 's business operations.

In addition to the issue of trademark infringement, you have the issue of tld recognition, everybody recognizes and remembers the .com tld and their country tld i.e. .co.uk but very few probably even think of the .net tld so you have the issue that people will remember or even naturally key fundable.com when looking for fundable meaning that there will be a significant loss of business for fundabe.net.
To say that there are not many domains out there is a bit naive, you may as well say that there are not many company names out there, you just need to come up with a unique name of your own rather than piggy back on the back of somebody else's with all the risks that that entails.

Can I ask why you're asking this valid question? This is my employer: For example, you think it would be a great idea for a company to start a funding business such as Fundable.net for a funding business. What would be the drawbacks on piggy backing on Fundable.com name and what would the advantages be? There are not many domains out there so, I would like to see what my clients options would be.
