Okay so I sent a comprehensive email to zopa 2 days ago, regarding the flakey operations of the website over the last week or so.
Someone called George just called me in the last hour and before he would speak to me wanted to get some sec info from me so I told him my first name and then said I wouldn't talk again unless he could provide some security info for me. I asked him for the 1st letter of my surname but he wouldn't confirm it apparently he couldn't say anymore for security reason. So I said that's it then, I explained that I couldn't talk to him either as he failed my security question.
He then suggested that I call Zopa I said I can't as I don't have a phone with any credit on at the moment. Suspecting he was really Zopa I said is it about the email. I had sent it to them as
"Issa Khafaga contactus@zopa.com"
somehow my email system had got Issa's name embedded into the email address in the past. So I mentioned that the email was perhaps entitled wrongly as Issa. He seemed to know Issa so he probably was from Zopa - who knows.
I've never had Zopa ring me about an email usually they just email back and I suggested he do the same - I usually insist on this anyway then I have a legal trail if anything gets said etc. Old Manager habit sad I know but a good one to always have a paper trail (in this case electronically).
Sadly this must fairly common practice at Zopa so how long is it going to be before someone falls into the trap and inadvertently gives up their info. Anyway he agreed to use email so we will see if it really was zopa. To be fair I was detailing a lot of things and based on the the number of "500 oops" responses I am getting their logs must be keeping people busy anyway. The site is still very unstable on my desktop and barely usable on Mrs Aju's tab in fact the mobile version has steadily become unusable for anything worth doing in Zopa for a while IMHO.

Like you, I never get into confirming my identity to cold callers unless they can prove who they are. My default position is - give me a phone number that I can verify (e.g. on an official website) and I'll ring you back. Pays to be careful.

Yeah, sometimes I like to play with the offenders as its completely stupid that I can't ask for something that identifies they are who they say they are before I talk to them.
In this case I'm complaining with a view to helping zopa fix their flakey system so i'm never going to spend my money doing that. But I have had people for some companies that clearly are not those companies but have a calling list and are trying to sell to me when I query them they say it's ok no need to bother.
Now that banks are suggesting they will never to ask for security info - their words for most of them - and Zopa wants to be a bank they perhaps need to find another way to identify who I am if they wish to talk to me at their expense.
Having said all that I've never ever called Zopa so I don't even know if their contact numbers are free ones but hey they will contact me somehow that gets a resolution on my complaint. They have another day or so before they break their promise in the email I got back when I sent original. (Just checked again its not a promise more an aim!, the number they gave though is definitely a costing one unless I had a relevant contract.)

Don't worry about it. I had good experience with zopa phone calls.
TBH, if i remember correctly, zopa called me from an unknown number. They asked me for info to confirm my identity.
The worst experience i had so far is from HSBC, most of the time from a oversea call center, asking for security info for identification purposes but without explaining who they are or what the call is about.
It seems even First Direct sometimes uses HSBC oversea call centres for potential fraudulent activities check as well. 😑
One of my strategy to deal with these unsure identity confirmation is to give out false identification on purpose, if they say it does not match, then it is likely a genuine call

One of my strategy to deal with these unsure identity confirmation is to give out false identification on purpose, if they say it does not match, then it is likely a genuine call I like that but to be honest I never talk to anyone who calls unannounced. BT usually asks if it can call me when I am dealing with them on one of their forums. That always seems to be fair I always say I am going to ask a security question and if they don't mind that I am happy for them to call me. I wasn't actually worrying I just thought it might help others who may not be quite so security savvy to know that Zopa or someone else - I haven't had a legit response as yet still.

If you do speak to someone legit, ask why the Statements page for the current month (mine anyway) hasn't been updated since May 8th.

If you do speak to someone legit, ask why the Statements page for the current month (mine anyway) hasn't been updated since May 8th. Mine says similar but the 9th invest is 1am and isa is mid afternoon same day my transactional shows much later dates and times perhaps the statement report generator has stalled. My email was sent on the 9th and reported a number of issues included forced logouts in statement and loanbook. A lot of 500 something has gone wrong errors would have been filling the logs as well. I notice also that the new login system has been pulled for all platforms too. I reorted those issues too.
