In line with our consultation on the future development of the Forum - this is a poll to help assess the likelihood of the viability and success of a page dedicated to referral links to P2P Platforms where the Forum would receive the referral fee/income without the need to invest in the Platform or it's products. We are hoping to be able to determine Platform appetite for collaboration as well as Member views on this concept.

It seems to me that if the forum has a referral links page, then in some way/by some people it could be taken as endorsing those P2P platforms. Which may a) increase the risk of being sued, and b) require a name change as it's not an Independent forum any more.

I've not discussed this with all the other Volunteer Staff, in my mind though all platforms would be asked if they had a "referral program" and all could take part, and all platforms would have an entry on the referral page even if they didn't yet have a program. Any platform could end it's program when they wanted. Others might want to start a scheme just for the new tax year. I'd expect them to come and go.

If your referral deals are better than those available elsewhere and given this forum is somewhat the goto for p2p then it should be then it could be quite the moneyspinner. Obv need to maintain independence regardless.

I just do not see how you can be independent if you are assisting and accepting money from a platform's marketing initiative.
As a real example - for instance Youtube were hosting certain videos that certain advertisers objected to. As soon as a few businesses put their hands up and said they would not advertise if they were linked to the content, Youtube removed the content. Regardless of whether or not P2P would censor posts in order to keep marketing privileges with associated platforms, if you really are truly independent, then I cannot see how this is appropriate.
It's basic stuff - if you take kickbacks from the platforms who have a forum here, then you are no longer independent.
How much money do the forum really need here? Why not solicit donations (anoynomised) and just ask if some other people wish to take on the running of the forum?
Like with opensource software if a package maintainer decides he no longer wants to do it, someone else picks up the batten and life goes on. The last thing we need it forum spin-off or forks etc.
I sense there may be other motivations here at play...? Why the sudden urge to monetize? Sorry but if you really fear legal action, a few quid from referals probably won't even pay for your lawyers first letter!
