With the Collateral affair still ongoing I was just wondering whether anyone had been scammed & if so would like to enlighten us so that we don't fall into the same trap. I myself have not been scammed but I have to admit I came pretty close this January with the Whatsapp fee one, I started to fill in my card details before it dawned on me what I was doing.

Watch out for any investment using Dragon's Den (TV show) as a hook. I got caught by one it claimed that that the DD stars had invested in. I paid by card and disputed the transaction so expect not to be out of pocket. Google Dragon's Den scam.

Martin Lewis (of money savings expert fame) took action against Facebook "to try and stop fake adverts using his name and picture being posted on the site by scammers"

I volunteer a few sessions a week at a local community center and teach mainly elderly people, how to stay safe online (and offline, phone calls etc) and not get scammed and what to look out for.
Fortunately, I personally haven't been scammed (yet) but have had quite a few people in that have and it is so sad...
... I mean, if anyone should be scamming these people, surely it should be me!! ;-)
I'll get round to typing some up over the next say or so.

Come close a few times on eBay.
Bought a phone off one guy and he said he'd send the phone and one year guarantee separately. The guarantee (a piece of paper with 1 year guarantee scrawled on lined notepaper in biro) arrived in a couple of days by registered post. The phone, of course, never arrived.
I raised it with eBay saying I hadn't received the phone and they denied the claim as I had received the phone according to tracking and there was no possibility of appeal. I reported the fraud online to the police, got a crime reference number and phoned eBay. Apparently, I should have reported it as not as described. They reopened the claim, I did as requested and got my money back.

I got scammed getting a phone repaired. Ended up getting the phone back but they hadn't even taken the post-it with my address etc off the phone after about 2 months. Didn't get my money back, website was no longer up, director moved onto another shady company etc - for £100 odd pound I didn't have the will to do anything further about it tbh. Girlfriend also got scammed by one of those continuing payment authority scams on facebook ads  |
