Hi i have pledged support! This is the first time a company has come back for a second loan on the platform - I invested in the first debenture that BNRG raised - Hoo solar - and so far it has generated 8% above forecast! However if it had not over performed it would have been a bit of disappointment considering it only started operations in March and we have had one of the best summers in years!

Debeast - what do you make of the new inflation linked Debenture from Abundance. Just starting to get my head round it, but looks solid. With commodity prices only going one way over the medium to long term with all the developing world..... developing .. prices are only set to rise. My bet therefore is that on average over the 20 year term inflation will run ahead of the 2.8% (rpi) figure that Abundance model on and therefore there is quite a bit of upside in this Debenture. How do you see it?

I invested happily in Hoo, and will pledge and invest in the new debenture. I don't know about inflation par se, but energy prices are only going to go upwards. Despite the moaning linked to the fact that energy use has been unbelievably cheap in recent decades, it's actually still cheap for what it gives modern society. As a theme, a lot of my investment decisioning is based on this premise, so Hoo and anything from Abundance gets my money.

I've had a modest amount in each of the variable rate debentures, but skipped the fixed rate one that has been open for a few weeks as I prefer the tax treatment of the variable rate debentures (dividends) as opposed to the fixed rate ones (basic rate tax deducted at source). Note bonuses in both cases are paid gross - a tax form nightmare !

They have appeared to have changed the way they pay interest. Offer document for BNRG Gorse says pay Gross and their FAQs have been updated - now treated the same as zopa and funding circle -
westonkev does ratesetter pay Gross? I have not used you guys yet?

Agreed, the FAQ has been changed to state that the interest on the fixed and inflation linked debentures are paid gross. I'll skip this one (again for tax reasons), and wait for the two variable rate debentures due soon. What do people make of the inflation linked concept here ?

Apols for the delay and i can see others have stepped in in the meantime So IMHO: 2 words: Love itMRC taught me about the tax implications so if you are hitting your upper limits take his advice to only go for the variable ones

Has anybody understood how this works from the other side (in this case BNRG); I'm trying to see how easily they could cut and run if there were problems, the fit rate was cut or whatever?

Hi Shimself - each project is a self contained PLC so all the risks and rewards are contained in this one entity. BNRG are the developers of the site and own the equity but it would be legally impossible for them to sell the underlying asset the (solar systems) and not pay down the debenture holders. I think from memory there are clauses in the deed which also contract the plc to pay a penalty to debenture holders if they try and buy out debenture holders early.
The combination of the Debenture (i.e. a debt security), PLC structure and that you investing directly into a company with income generating asset are things i really like about the Abundance model.
Would others agree with this?

I think thats a very good summary. The only thing to bear in mind is that its a long term investment and that that rate is variable (at least in this one) With money locked away for that period you may(or may not) miss other better opportunities
