The mysteries of modern websites !! A question may be chris can answer I have to suffer poor hotel wifi connections more than I would like, and get particularly annoyed when I see bandwidth being consumed by stuff that seems to have no bearing on what I want to see. So whilst refreshing the /lend/ page on the AC website I am rather perplexed to see this in the status bar Waiting for googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/viewthroughconversion/1005687466?random=1386111983448&cv=7&fst=13861119 (I've OCR'd it off a screen grab so there may be odd characters mis-represented - Able2Extract Professional is a brilliant package with generally very few errors) So given the AC website doesn't have visible googleads, why have I got to wait whilst the webpage communicates with the googleads server ?

It looks like they use a standard footer which has a whole lot of code for doing traffic analysis. The code is in the bottom of the page so as not to greatly effect the rest of the page however it depends on your browser as to how great the effect will be should there be a delay in these links, MSIE is notorious waiting for everything to be available before rendering and thus appears slow, chrome and others don't wait and start rendering the page very early on and thus appear faster. If you are regularly stuck using a low bandwidth connection but have a fixed base with a high speed connection think about running a machine at your base and accessing it through remote access software that replicates the desktop on the screen of your remote device. For the technically minded it can be done for free but there are commercial services such as www.gotomypc.co.uk which are more user friendly.

We use three services for tracking how our marketing and website are performing. Crazy Egg and Google Analytics both perform a similar function and are used to track visitors, see which pages they visit, etc. We also use Google AdWords Conversion, which is the one you've pointed out, which tracks people who click through from one of our adverts to see what they do on the site and if they hit various goals (such as registering or placing a bid).
Nothing sinister or that is being wasteful, just some analytics that help us understand our users, how they use the site, and which adverts are working for us.
If you're using Chrome then I recommend using a plugin called Ghostery. It highlights all the third party services used by websites and lets you selectively block them if you want to save bandwidth or don't feel like being tracked. I believe there's a ghostery plugin for Firefox as well but I haven't used it.

I have discovered that Ghostery is also available for Opera (by far the best browser in my opinion), and I am using Opera on Mint Linux. It hasn't half speeded up loading of the AC web pages, and others.

You could also try Privdog from my friend Melih at Comodo. privdog.com/index.htmlYou can easily see what is being blocked and set it to block all ad networks. Facebook is everywhere which is why I avoid it like the plague.
