I tried (and try) to stay objective when it comes to political figures. I'll listen to what they say and agree or not regardless of which tribe they are from. Anyway, was it wise for any Health Secretary to say in public (whether true or not) its "out of control" ? The quote I saw was 'getting out of control'.

With the greatest of respect that is not correct. I just watched the video and he said "the new variant is out of control"

I'm seeing people on social media going mad at France having stopped ferry / eurotunnel traffic. But lets think of it another way:
1. UK says travel to other countries (other than business) must not happen 2. Matt Hancock says its 'out of control' (I recall that was the headline qote I saw) 3. The originating source/epicentre is Kent (as I recall) 4. kent is a hotspot
and how many vehicles go over ferry/through tunnel ? Is it 10,000 a day ? Its not entirely surprising that France want's to put the brakes on while they take stock of what is rolling off their side of the channel.

I don't often like to read much of what Laura Kuenssberg has to say as I find what she tends to write is short on actual insight and heavy on Government propaganda by unnamed sources. T his article is unfortunately no exception. I actually had to laugh in reading ..". .one minister involved in what's going on today told me "there is less drama than you might imagine", suggesting that actually behind the scenes "everything is clicking into place" because there have, literally, been rehearsals for this kind of situation"
'Clicking into place'. Well, that's a relief. The cards really have fallen all in our favour now, what with something worse than the worse case scenario popping along, and earlier than we even planned. It's clearly just one highly polished operation executed by world-beating professionals behind the scenes, I don't even know what we're concerned about.

Apologies if this has already been raised but isn't having Tier 4 areas bordering Tier 2 just idiotic?
I understand the need/desire for varying restrictions by area/region btw just not such a jump that can only drive behaviour not conducive to controlling the spread.

well knock me over with a feather - the UKs Redtops engaging in scaremongering and populist rabble rousing ? Whatever next, they'll soon be moaning about "regulations" requiring straight bannanas and bent cucumbers being demanded from their favourite bogeymen.....
Of course there IS a partial problem with food supply, which this certainly won't help: namely that the late change of tack with regard to Xmas arrangements means that in many cases foodstuff is in fact being 'domestically warehoused' in the wrong flaming homes. Quite what percentage of the 'normal' requirement that actually is I have no idea.
As an aside, I can't help but notice that a number of EU countries have not had much trouble "controlling their own borders" over the past 24 hours....

From other EU countries? Edit: I agree with the rest of your post although its not just the red tops at it. Hopefully this time if the real shortage is with fresh stuff produced down south, there isn't a huge amount of point stockpiling it - at least its hard to stockpile as you need a big freezer (which then makes a lot of stuff not as fresh...)

I wonder how many residents of Reading and Newbury (for example) in Tier 4 are being tempted to travel the 18 miles or so to Basingstoke (in Hampshire and in Tier 2) to complete their Christmas shopping.

Broccoli and cauliflower possibly in short supply? That's going to ruin Christmas.
I normally do my shopping on a Monday, so I wandered down to Tesco mid-morning to see what was going on. Car park was as crowded as a normal Saturday, with about 6 people in a queue at the entrance being checked in. In store everything was civilised, with all the check-outs manned, so no delay at the tills.

From PHE data, cases per 100k, i can’t justify Tier 4 reading while Burnley is Tier 3 except Reading is much closer to London Camden is in Tier 4 with similar stats in Oxford Tier 2

I have a click and collect for Wednesday (we still don't go in store), I wonder how much will be substituted or unavailable!
