Thanks registerme . Scientists in the US do use metric, though not exclusively. I lost confidence in the guy when at c4mins in he says that a milligram is a millionth of a gram! But I will put this down to a slip of the tongue and send it my science teacher daughter and my grandson who is doing A level physics. One measurement problem which has long bothered me relates to the search for gravitational waves. They use two lasers at right angles which send a pulse up to a mirror and back and measure the time taken. You can google all about it but the issue is that they have to measure distance to an accuracy of a fraction of the size of a molecule so I don't understand how they can get the mirror flat enough. If you come across the answer please let me know.
