I noticed there is no Bitcoin discussion in this forum, so I decided to start a new thread about this cryptocurrency. Feel free to contribute, and I will definitely contribute my opinion as well. Thank you.

I don’t class bitcoin as an investment. More like a bet/gamble.

I looked into mining it a few years ago but cost of hardware and electricity put me off.

I looked into mining it a few years ago but cost of hardware and electricity put me off. Miners are predominantly located in places where they can get cheap electricity and low internet friction. That is why Iceland, West Texas and some parts of China are the cheapest places to host miners.

The UK isn't so expensive in winter, if you can use the mining equipment to heat your home. Electricity is a bit more expensive than gas, and you would probably run it through the night unlike central heating. I thought about it a few years ago, but then decided against.
Edit - As a bonus you might be able to argue that Electricity is greener than gas.

The blockchain reward is only 6.5 now compared to 50 in 2009 so its just getting harder and harder to be profitable.

The trouble I have with bitcoin is still the only real world use it has is to buy drugs/less than legal services online. It's proven itself conceptually as a currency but who has actually used it as one? (Aside from buying the above ). I don't see much future potential for it beyond its current use so wouldn't hold it. Instead I hold Visa (A market leader in payments, standing to gain on the continued rise of online shopping and the decline of cash) and Adyen (A company providing software/hardware to assist merchants in receiving digital payments).

Thank you. Don't waste your time. That's my contribution. If you can't make money investing like a sensible human being in the stockmarket. Don't bother. If you can't make money speculating in Commodities or Forex. Don't bother. Chasing after the "coin of the day", be it Bitcoin or whatever else is stupid. Its not an investment. Its speculation. Sorry, but just telling it like it is. Its the modern day gold-rush. And just like the old gold rush, the majority will get hurt, or at least not become the gazillionaires they dreamt about ! So you're not keen then?

No intention to chase the coin of the day really. I am talking only about Bitcoin. And BTW, I doubt there are so many cryptos out there that we should talk about the coin of the day.

There are approximately 5,392 cryptocurrencies being traded with a total market capitalisation of $201bn (as of April 22, 2020). Yahoo Finance.

As a quick moneymaking/gambling addition to a balanced portfolio with only very small amounts of £££'s , i wouldn't call it a waste of time, or stupid.... I've been dabbling since the 2017/18 pump and dump in bitcoin and one or two others and 15% fluctuations per month are commonplace, if your happy to hold and your using only a very small % of disposable investment capitol, its both fun and profitable.... that's just my experience of messing with a bit of spare cash, i certainly wouldn't look at crypto's as anything else but a bit of fun. Edit.. And making money is always fun.
