Across the piece those European countries that welcome immigration tend to have a replacement rate greater that 1.0 and an economy that does generally well, unlike those that don't. So we probably do need more immigrants, what would be nice is to ensure a flow of bright/healthy ones who are used to living in towns and cities, speak English etc. HK sounds perfect to me.
There are a few British towns that could benefit from people like that. Yate or Froome come to mind.

The Brits should not be worried about a massive crowd flooding into Britain for 2 reasons.
Most of them just want citizenship for peace of mind, not real immigration. Besides, the UK is not top choice for people in Hong Kong looking for getting passports.

I'd rather invest in our own citizens than poach from other countries and deprive them of that capability. What we need is proper investment in living standards, education, and jobs. This really isn't rocket science. And we can't keep trying to import our way out of this mess. Anyone saying we should is just blinds to the failures of constantly out-sourcing our problems. But the thing I find most repulsive about this pathway to citizenship is that it's just virtue signalling.

I suspect Brexit also will make the UK less attractive and places like Cyprus more so.

Where investment can be made is in aspirations. Generations of ,"education" has been offered to people in this country without many understanding what a golden prize they have been offered. Even within parts of my distant families I see some young adults who aspire to failure rather than strive for success. So many who want to be paid for by a man, like the idea of state housing etc etc. Oscar Wilde said that all of us are lying in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars. Well many of us are face down.

I thought t his just posted from Vince Cable writing for the Independent was a worthwhile read on Hong Kong/China Ignore the byline by the way ("After Brexit, Britain has no choice but to become Donald Trump's cheerleader in a fruitless war on China") - It was poorly chosen. The article has little to do with Brexit, pretty much a little paragraph at the end, and is more about how China is viewed from the west and international relations.
