I guess you mean some English media are up in arms about one Spanish commentator saying that. I wonder if the same people were as hostile to France when they won the 1998 World Cup.... on French soil? This supposed "hostility" is being greatly exaggerated. There are always a few people who come up with bizarre theories, no matter which countries are involved. See e.g. some French complaining about Italy's Eurovision winners this year. It's not like this is front page on El Pais or Marca, as saying "Spanish media are up in arms" would suggest.

I've seen this anti-England hostility in a few places in the past day or two, so it's certainly more widespread than just one journalist's opinion. For Von der Leyen to openly express her support for Italy seems rather spiteful and inflammatory to me. In her position, probably better to remain circumspect, but she couldn't quite bring herself.

How weird would that be Italy is part of the EU so she should support them.

I don't see anything wrong with that. She basically said she'll support an EU member state when playing against one that's not. It's just a football match anyway. One could easily make a case for English people being hostile towards EU citizens, based on e.g. Danish family attacked by England fans. The thing, in both cases that would be a gross overgeneralisation. Most English people are very welcoming towards EU citizens, and most EU citizens are very welcoming towards English people. Media trying to whip up an "us vs them" mentality are frankly pathetic.

If Bruton is that concerned about UK produce somehow making its way down from Northern Ireland and tainting his country and the EU, isn't Ireland free to erect a customs barrier to prevent it? Nothing we could do to stop that. Instead of whingeing, just get on and do it. Apart from the small matter of the Good Friday Agreement. The Irish government are unwilling to break that. Fortunately, the UK government seem to have JUST enough gumption to be similarly unwilling. Currently. They moan about their own choice, though.

I wonder if the same people were as hostile to France when they won the 1998 World Cup.... on French soil? Except for the minor detail that France hosted every single match in that tournament, with travel for away fans working perfectly normally. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_FIFA_World_Cup#VenuesWhereas for this tournament, the venues are spread across an entire continent - and beyond. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2020#VenuesQuite how the UK managed to blag two of the twelve venues, then arrange to play virtually every match at home, during a pandemic which meant away fans basically could not travel... Definitely a bit of an advantage.

And apologies Chaps & Chapesses, I have been compelled to bet on an Italy Win, the odds are just so much better. Gotta leave emotion out of the equation, I can forget my Dual Nationality when it suits me.

How weird would that be Italy is part of the EU so she should support them. I question if she'd have done so quite so readily had Italy been facing Scotland or Wales.... or Iceland, Switzerland or Norway. Can't help feeling there's Brexit backlash in play.

It does seem that Ursula hates the UK with a visceral vengeance. Wonder if she had a British boyfriend once who done her wrong? Hell hath no fury, ............... 😆

Oh yes, I'm very capable of being British/English when they win - paternal Grandfather born in Blackfriars Road, I have quite the pedigree.

Good luck England! I hope you win, even though Italy have been the better team.
Please remember if you win the bragging right only extends to 4 years.

She's an Anglophile having spent some time in London hiding from the Baeder Meinhof in the 70s. That said who cares. She's generally regarded as incompetent with poor judgment so her endorsement is probably about as worth having as Boris'. Yes, the EU commission generally doesn't comment on such things but then due to above she needs to curry favour & it probably isn't an original opinion anyway. 😆

Definitely a bit of an advantage. It should be obvious, but the Uk is not a member of UEFA. The four associations of England, Wales, Scotland and NI are members of UEFA. So in effect the 4 associations resident in the UK got 2 of the venues. There were 24 associations represented at the euros, with 12 venues (originally 13). France would not have been a candidate presumably due to their having hosted the whole shebang in 2016. Still, there are 55 associations in UEFA, and not all those who were picked as venues actually qualified, as Ireland didn't make it despite Dublin being a venue. But you would expect that the venues were originally picked in the expectation that the host would be present. I think we are forgetting part of the reason Wembley was used extensively is because the govt. gave reassurances about levels of spectator attendance, esp. for semi's and final. Also matches to be held in Dublin would have to have been moved when it was withdrawn as a venue. I have no idea whether that led to additional matches at Wembley. note that at least one additional English match would have been played elsewhere had they not finished top of their group.
