I had a text from my GP surgery saying that I could apply and to phone them for an appointment, I phoned immediately and was given the two appointments 3 weeks apart, however they could not accept my wife as she was under 80. Umm, the text point is of interest. My parents mobile phone is useless - no signal. I do hope the surgery has not been trying to contact them on that...... No wifi calling? Have you considered to switch their mobile numbers to a provider supporting wifi calling? www.4g.co.uk/news/ee-o2-three-and-vodafone-which-networks-offer-wi-fi-calling/

Just don't... We have no signal at home. It is becoming a MAJOR pain in the 'arris with the ever-increasing amount of 2FA. I can usually receive an SMS by leaving my phone on the roof of the car outside for five minutes or so, and hoping the login hasn't timed out. The least-worst for signal round here are Vodafone and EE. We currently have PAYG phones on Voda's One tariff (quid a day max for calls/texts/data unless you go mad on data). They're decent modern mainstream-brand phones, albeit not top-end, a Nokia 6.1+ and a Motorola G8. I think we tend to get through ten quid every couple of months... Voda have definitely discontinued their SureSignal femtocell - they suggested I find a second-hand one on eBay. Except if the device has been unused for 12 months, it's bricked... and they couldn't tell me how long it would continue to work anyway. EE also seem to have discontinued their SignalBox. EE won't send me a SIM to check coverage unless I pay for a call/data "package" on it. Which, of course, I may not be able to use... Both only offer WiFi calling on monthly contracts, and on a tiny handful of devices - neither of ours... so we'd need two new phones as well. We're lucky. We have FTTP. Further up the hill, the fibre runs out, and people have a choice of <1meg ADSL or satellite, unless they can get a mobile signal...

Have you tried Three PAYG? I hadn't, because they're generally thought to have no signal anywhere near here... And they use O2's network? Same as Three, then. Both their coverage maps don't even pretend we'll get an indoor signal. Mind you, Voda say "limited coverage", and EE "Outdoor only", too... Free SIMs on the way for each. Let's see... Ta!

Tesco Wifi International calling app is free to download on App store / Google play. It even comes with free £1 credit.

My work mobile is Vodafone, and we have WiFi calling as an option on our contract. I have a crummy V network signal (ironically I have a perfectly good one on my personal mobile). It seems to work well: however, if you are into perambulating while talking (don't try it if your a bloke) then it has an annoying tendency to jump off the WiFi and onto a weak network signal and lose the connection.

It used to be you could get one for minimal cost virtually anywhere. A good while ago, but I remember getting landlines to really remote sites for not a lot. Things may have changed though unfortunately.

I've complained to a few places about that, if HMRC and various building Societies can send pass codes to landlines why do some companies refuse to? A few can send artificial (garbled) translated voice SMS messages to landlines which are just about acceptable. The assumption that everyone has access to a mobile phone with good reception is ridiculous, you should be able to choose how to receive 2FA codes.

We get a few of those from various couriers. "...consignment number eight hundred and seventy three million four hundred and ninety three thousand six hundred and seventeen..."

oddly my partner can no longer access her hive App without a code sent to her mobile, that's OK for her, except she's never given them a number to message so she's caught in catch 22, the App wants a message sent to your phone to confirm it's you, to allow you to set the phone number to send a message to.
I recently had an experience with nectar where the codes were valid for 10 minutes but took 90 to arrive.
On average if someone local sends me a text it takes at least 10 minutes to arrive, if i want to adjust my heating I want it now not in 10 minutes when the text arrives

Huge thanks to star dust for splitting these posts out of another thread. This is a topic that I think a few of us will be concerned in.

Don't get me started on cwap mobile signals. When we moved here to rainy wiltshire we were not that rsed about mobile signals, we should have been although we are very happy with our house. We are on the outskirts of the town and some days have to hold the mobile out the upstairs window above the roof or worse go and stand across the road. Not that great in my view and not very conducive to texts for banking etc.. It is what it is I guess. Having watched all this covid stuff for quite a while one wonders how many people will get the text signal for the message to come and get the vax anyway!. Mind you just looked at the vaccine locations near us and sadly there are none near us anyway ...

That's something that could very well be an issue - I had a text to get the 50-64 flu vaccine. SWMBO didn't. I only got it (three days after it was sent) because I was deliberately checking for an SMS for 2FA...

We both got texts and funnily enough they came in ok that time a higher being must have been favourable to us that day!. I've never seen SWMBO before smiled a bit when i looked it up! I could transfer to that one but Mrs Aju probably would not be amused - bit too close to home!.
