Good Afternoon,
I am brand new to this type of investing and would be keen to know where is best to look?
I don`t have a huge amount to invest but probably up to £10,000.
Any suggestions from the experts?
Many thanks

Any suggestions from the experts? Many thanks In the present climate of quite a few failed P2P platforms I don't think many people will want to recommend particular platforms. But you are in the right place to read up on the available platforms and what the general opinions of them are. If you find a few platforms that you think you might like ask specific questions about those until you are comfortable to invest. Read the platform T&Cs understand exactly how each platform works, remember no FSCS protection, try not to invest money that you could not afford to lose, past performance is no guarantee of future performance, etc.

I'm not an expert, but one thing I would recommend is to diversify your 10k across a number of platforms, this helps to reduce the risk. This forum has threads for all existing p2p platforms, so it is probably good to start with reading the latest posts to get some idea of what is on offer and filter out those that are not suitable for your risk/return appetite.

Hello Greenwood2,
Many thanks for your information and suggestions. They are very helpful to know.
There are so many different companies on here that it will take me a while to look through each one and get a feeling for myself.
Most companies seem to deal with property although one I found was talking about personal items like watches and paintings so I will have a look at both. Checking over the T&C`S is certainly very important so thank you again for pointing that out to me.

investandlearn , Did you have a specific 'flavour' of P2P in mind? Are you wanting to be 'hands on', picking individual loans? Or do you anticipate investing into something perhaps more closely resembling a fund which a P2P platform may manage on your behalf? Perhaps most importantly, is that £10,000 wholly 'uncommitted'. In other words, it's not money you knowingly have plans for a year or two down the line. If it isn't (uncommitted), then forget P2P. Not only is the risk of losing money significant, the risk of not having it returned when you might expect is even greater. PS: There's a new platform just launching and are going through 'the Forum Inquisition' in this thread; might be something to learn from the questions being asked and observations being made which could be applied elsewhere.

This one has been a reliable earner for me and many others. My return from Unbolted has so far (4 years) been approx 8% p.a. You can't invest a large sum in one go, but you can build a small portfolio over a period of time.

That is very interesting to know. I think that must of been the site that I was looking at. I like the look of that and 8% pa seems an excellent return in today`s market.
Do they have regular loans for people to invest into?

Hello Moderator,
Thank you for the suggestion with regard to spreading my money over a number of different platforms. That is something that I might not have considered but thinking about it, it makes perfect sense.
I have been looking at all the threads, there are so many!!
I think I am in for a lot of reading.
Many thanks

I'm also a fan of Unbolted, and strongly agree with df that it's getting harder and harder to deploy funds there. I added £1k in mid December and I've still got £700+ uninvested. If will be easier for you as a newbie to get deployed though as you won't have repayments that need reinvesting for the first 6 months. One advantage of this is that you end up with very high diversification on the platform as you are only assigned £5 in most loans.

Hello iRobot,
Thanks for the post. I really am a complete novice to be honest but would like to be able to make my own choices in what I invest and when. I don`t want to invest into a fund.
The money I have is purely for investment and not something that I am going to need for a few years.
What is the new platform called? I will look at the thread once I find it.
Many thanks

Hello Ace,
Thanks for the information and confirmation that you are a fan of Unbolted. I must say that I like the assets that you can invest your money into on this site although having to wait several months to just invest a few £100 is a bit annoying.
Why is it so hard to invest your money into these loans then on Unbolted? Do they restrict you or do they just not have many loans for you?

Why is it so hard to invest your money into these loans then on Unbolted? Do they restrict you or do they just not have many loans for you? There are a few loans each day, but most are for relatively small amounts (e.g. £1000 for a watch). They clearly have far more investor funds waiting to be invested than they can generate loans for. In theory, you can select which loans to invest in, but in practice all the loans are taken up by auto investors, so nothing left for manual investing. So, this platform might not suit your desire to select the loans you want.

Personally I'd just stick it in Fundsmith and leave it there.

Hi, I have been investing in P2P for a few years, but am a novice compared to most on here! The things I learned initially are: If you use an auto lend platform drip feed your money in or you can end up with some relatively large holdings. Try a small amount in a number of platforms as they all work slightly differently. You should read T&Cs but it is unlikely you will be able to understand from them everything that might hack you off in the future. And the T&Cs never mention the risk of joining a platform that has no respect for its investors. You will get a good feel for those platforms on here. I'm happy to tell you to avoid Funding circle and Crowd2fund. Accept from the beginning that you will have defaults and personal guarantees are generally poor security (I cleaned that up) And losses may take the rest of your life to recover. If at all of course.
As self select platforms go Proplend seems to be widely liked. The only complaint seems to be that investors can't invest enough. I had one write off and I think they have only had one! I just started investing with Crowd property and Unbolted. I did my research and found them to have good 4th Way reviews and generally positive comments on here and they were a bit different to other platforms I use. I have found them to be easy to use and very responsive to questions.
Just my views for what they are worth.

That is very interesting to know. I think that must of been the site that I was looking at. I like the look of that and 8% pa seems an excellent return in today`s market. Do they have regular loans for people to invest into? There are new loans (or renewals) coming out almost every working day. There are mainly very small loans and they get split between the investors (depending on their settings). It's is auto-invest, so the money you deposit will be distributed to a number of loans each day. To give you some idea - this is my last 4 days: 5th Feb - £11.09 (2 loans), 6th Feb - £7.71 (1 loan), 8th Feb 20.91 (2 loans), 9th Feb - £28.45 (1 loan). So if you decide to dip your toe into this and want to avoid cash drag, you better option would be to drip-feed (i.e. not to deposit a large sum in one go). Despite the rates offered the banks are at ridiculously low rate now, it is better to store the cash in banks instead of keeping them on p2p platforms earning you nothing.
