Just had an email ostensibly from Computershare but with a funny address:
upcegffehbhehmdehg [at] mailservice.computershare.co.uk
(I've substituted [at] for @.)
I do have Gilts registered with Computershare, but the message wasn't addressed to me by name, just starting "Hello". And the sender's email address looks dodgy.
The message started: "We’re excited to tell you about our new and improved Investor Centre, built to make it even easier to transact and interact with your share portfolio when and how you want. There is nothing you need to do right now, we will be in touch again in the next few weeks when we launch."
Any thoughts?

Well, it's a bloody odd phishing technique if that's what it genuinely is...
"No, don't click or do anything now. Just a heads-up that we might try and rob you in a few months."

If I'm not sure an email is genuine, I access the website whichever way I normally would (rather than a link in the email) to check for information.

After I posted I did check out the Computershare website, which had several warnings about phishing emails, especially those that advised urgent action (unlike the one I'd got). Having worked through a great many contact options I finally found an email address for gilts queries (I hold Government stock) and sent off a message seeking reassurance. I received a very quick reply assuring me that the email was genuine. "However, this shouldn’t be related to Gilts. Which company do you hold shares in, then I can forward your email appropriately."
As it happens I have shares in two VCTs for which Computershare provides services.
(A few months ago I joined the NextDoor neighbourhood forum, some of whose members have been very concerned about vaccination letters from the NHS, vans prowling around the streets etc. I guess that some of their caution has rubbed off on me. But that is a funny email address ...)

my favourite one of mine was httpColonslashslashdot which used to cause lots of fun when people asked what my email address was

Five days after my query to Computershare as to whether the email was genuine, I got an email from a VCT I hold, confirming that it was - nothing to do with my Gilts holding.
Just before Easter, I got a further email inviting telling me to re-register with the Investor Centre. This entailed the most detailed process I've yet to encounter. (Yes, I do realise that it's for my own good and for the security of my investment.) The usual name and address, email address, mobile number (which I don't like to make freely available, but the site insisted), password; then I had to set up a "site seal", choosing a colour and three words, then set up three Q & As (mother's maiden name, favourite dog and so on).
Then I had to confirm that the device I was using was my usual one, look at a confirmatory email, click on a link, and return to the form to confirm I'd received the email. Now I have to await a confirmatory snailmail letter before I can access my account (not that I need to).
The process was interrupted by my browser suggesting a couple of passwords (you know the sort: xfgH2Y7@9ab) and asking me if I wanted it to save them. (No thanks.)
Now I have to cryptically note down what some of the key info is ...

I hate 2 factor authentication
My Hive app is trying to get me to set it up I've explained to the devs why it's stupid, ie the app is on my phone and they will send a code to the phone if I want to do things.
I wanted it to make my life easier not more complicated

I wanted it to make my life easier not more complicated I must admit I have been pretty pee'd off in the past when in the middle of the night, the Nest's "inteligent" AI/ML decided it was time to put the heating on. To turn it off without going downstairs and disabling the alarm, I had to log in and get a text sent to my phone.... While I'm on the subject of red tape, how helpful do you think it is having data protection (gdpr) pop-ups on every site? To you and the website owners.

To you and the website owners.I think 95% or more of people just accept, i'm sure if we designed a website and put in the T's and C's that "we have the right to destroy your home if you post a negative review" people would still just click yes.
