Every truck North Africa & ME, and several cranes, heading to Egypt, followed by a big explosion.

There's two alternative routes between the two ends of the Suez canal. One is round Cape of Good Hope. That adds 12-14 days to a typical Indian Ocean-Atlantic journey. The other is via the Pacific... They had an expert on R4 talking about this earlier - the quickest solution is going to be digging - the sides are just sand. What they're hoping is that the 1.3km long ship doesn't sag in the middle while the ends are suspended on the banks... There's quite a bit of that conk buried in the bank, isn't there...?

As a serious note Radio 4 said this morning 10% of the worlds trade goes via the Suez Canal. So that could be a big hit for the next few weeks whilst ships go round ( at some point a decision will have to be made, do we stay and wait or do we set off round Africa ).
The operators say they are opening up an old channel so some vessels will be able to get through, but I assume a bit like an accident on a motorway extracting the vessels nearest the scene may be an issue.

This brings the memories flooding back.
In the 80's as a young civil engineer I spent 3 years working in Egypt, including some time spent building a tunnel under the canal at Suez. I always felt sorry for Ferdinand de Lesseps who was a national hero after completeng the canal in Suez, but ended up a figure of ridicule with a criminal record after the fiasco of trying to build the Panama canal (along with Mr Eiffel). Apparently he couldn't see the difference between building the canal in Suez (the sun shines every day, all digging in sand and nowhere was the ground level more than 10 feet above sea level) and building a canal in Panama (heavy tropical rainfall and a route that required rock hundreds of feet deep to be excavated).
You would have thought that excavating the sand around the bow would be relatively easy and then give it a nudge to point it in the right direction. In 2015 much of the canal was dualed, but the ship appears to be stuck in a single carriageway section.
Certainly appears to be a backlog building up - https://www.vesselfinder.com (the skyscanner of the oceans)

All my feeds are saying it is still stuck despite what the Egyptian Authorities claimed earlier.
It's put upward pressure on oil prices

one suggestion seems to be to use the other mega ships in the area as effectively sea anchors so one behind would put pressure on the stern to swing it round as it comes free
