The old boy had a good innings, but full sympathy for Her Majesty today. Been a tough couple of months for her. <doffs cap>

It's tragic news indeed.
Feel for HM the Queen. It was a long marriage.

It is very sad. He was a right old character and had the right stuff. And the two of them were clearly very close - it wasn't a public show. Makes you wonder how long she will now manage to go on.
Was he already diagnosed as terminally ill when he came out of hospital I wonder ?

Wall Street it's being done as a sign of respect, which I wholeheartedly support.
What is a bit much ( IMHO ) is the other UK channels continuing as normal, and doubtless we will have many complaining on social media that X Y or Z has ben taken off the air tonight.

I see the BBC is in full propaganda mode though, cleared their schedules on multiple channels until early-doors tomorrow.
Not that I watch mutch (if any) BBC. But in 2021 its a bit OTT, especially as BBC has hourly news anyway and a 24 hour news channel.
In what way is it propaganda? Unless you mean they are attempting to influence republican types to shed a tear for the monarchy ? I find the _slightly_ more subtle propaganda they put out on most powerful countries of the world far more concerning. I'm thinking Russia, USA, China and of course Europe. Not to mention the "positive" propaganda on topics like AZN is safe etc.

I wonder if they will bury him at sea to bypass the Covid Collective problems of a state funeral?

He was my favourite royal, It's a pity he couldn't have made it to 100; so close. Even so, I'm with @wallstreet: I don't want every channel to be swamped with any one topic, including this. Diversity & choice is what's needed.

I wonder if they will bury him at sea to bypass the Covid Collective problems of a state funeral? He was entitled to a state funeral, but apparently didn't want one. So there will be no lying in state and a just a simple family funeral (wonder if Harry will attend given quarantine requirements)

I wonder if they will bury him at sea to bypass the Covid Collective problems of a state funeral? unlikely, but he would probably have appreciated that.

This is how I understand it anyway. I would expect ERII is probably grateful for it being a very private affair. I imagine that members of TVP are probably very happy that 'Operation Forth Bridge' is no doubt now going to be a considerably simpler affair.

Was he already diagnosed as terminally ill when he came out of hospital I wonder ? 99yo leaves hospital after a month. Dies 3wks later. Doesn't seem a long shot to assume there wasn't much to be done, so he was made comfortable. As for the blanket coverage (6 solid hours and counting on R4), just remember that this is the dress rehearsal...

Having to listened to and enjoyed the news from the USA on 'Anderson Cooper's News 360', I've now discovered my 'smart radio' also has podcasts.

Typical extract (this one from the Sun) - As the consort of the Queen, Prince Philip is entitled to a state funeral.
The only site I have seen saying otherwise is USAtoday

and the BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56694327also includes the statement: "On rare occasions, by order of the monarch and following a vote in Parliament to approve the funds, state funerals have been held for people other than the sovereign, including for naval hero Lord Nelson and wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill." The last 3 consorts had a "lying in state" (which Philip won't be having) but I also don't think those were state funerals. A "royal ceremonial funeral" is "in line with custom...." . This is according to no less a body than the College of Arms (you never know when you might need to quote the College of Arms as a source.......). I suspect the BBC has been preparing for this for rather a long time and probably have the facts straight. (as have TVP, the Met, the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, and rather a large number of other bodies (no pun intended)).
