This morning I visited my small local bank branch (a threatened species) to draw out some £50 notes. I was courteously greeted in the doorway and directed to the external cash dispenser. "It doesn't give £50 notes," squeaked I, to be told that I was to draw out the desired sum in £20 notes and take them inside to be exchanged for fifties. Luckily the sun was in, because often at that time of day it can shine onto the dispenser screen, rendering it difficult to read.
Inside my twenties were laboriously counted and bundled, then I was given my fifties. (I gather that early fears about Covid being transmittable on bank notes have been allayed.)
Come to think of it, I had the same experience towards the end of the Old Normal at a larger branch that had just moved premises in the town centre and where staff were extremely keen that customers Did It Themselves. I was a bit irritated when the greeter asked me if I "had that much money in my account". I wouldn't seek to take it out if I didn't, would I ...
I did wonder if my experiences were due to the branch cashiers having a run on £20 notes and needing to replenish their supply from the dispensers ...

Why did you NEED £50s?
Can't even think when I last saw one. Are they still red? Have they changed to plastic yet?

My latest bank visit resulted in old non plastic £20's as they had run out altogether.
In my part of the world there is NO concrete................builders merchants claim that Hs2 has bought up the whole supply direct from source.
(Or we could blame Brexit , doesn't it all come from France?)
