Well, I just weighed myself for the first time since the beginning of this whole COVID episode. Nearly 240 lbs. So yes, inflation has definitely arrived .

I'm about to start a weight loss program imminently. Pre-covid I was a skinny daily runner and secret smoker who never watched TV. 14 months of no cigarettes and swapping exercise for box sets has endowed me with fat deposits I do not require.

Apparently I need to relearn this as I am a Brit and Brits call for return to traditional imperial measurements (It's the Express though).

God the Express really is a rag most suited to the closet isn't it. Except these days I assume it is all online, so its suited to the virtual closet. I think it was michaelc who referred to it as 'Brexiteer Porn' or similar. Back in the days when my parents got the Express, as well as the Times, it was also pretty bad, but now its just complete and utter garbage. that article contains the following diamond amongst stones: "A respondent in favour of a return to imperial, said: “I want imperial measures brought back just to poke it up the insidious EU and to show we really are out of their control and are a sovereign nation not a supplicant of the EU.”"So at least it is a source of humour. You couldtake a load of their stuff and put it into speech bubbles emanating from characters in Viz.

I must admit I do read the Express, for the sheer unrelenting upbeat message in the face of whatever life throws at it. If I can get the bloody thing to load as it's so stuffed with ads. I loved this one, you can almost see the speech bubbles above the characters quoted. Unfortunately in this one, they either interviewed the wrong person or they sensationally misquoted them:- "A second added that the EU will begin not to see the repercussions of a massive loss of trade to such a large market"'That's Ireland screwed!' Brexiteers celebrate as historic Australia deal 'hammers' EU

The relentless EU bashing by The Daily Getsmuchworse is hilarious.

Seems to be happening here, too... 95kg low point late 2019. 108kg high point a month or so ago... Still, the gym's re-opened, so that's going back where it belongs! (1m88, before any sarcastic responses, so barely over 30BMI even at my lardiest...)

I well remember the late 1960s when the then Labour government thought it could control inflation with price controls. As an employer I thought the opposite and still believe that inflation is caused by pay rises brought on by labour shortages. I believe there is a danger of this happening again now but the politicians and experts don't think so. Most of them are too young to remember the serious problems through the 70s and seem to believe that low inflation rates are normal and will go on for ever. The Bank of England seem to be waking up to the danger at last.

My late father explained inflation to me when I was younger thus :-
bakery workers ask for an extra 25p per hour
so the price of a loaf goes up
So the lorry drivers say we need a pay rise as a loaf is now more expensive
so the lorry drivers get a rise
and the price of everything else in the shops goes up
so everyone gets a pay rise
and tax rates go up to pay the nurses and doctors etc more
and the councils put the rates up
And the bakery workers ask for a pay rise.
I'm just old enough to remember the threshold payments when if inflation was high automatic pay rises ensured

Please let's not get back into imperial measure nonsense, I spent my first few years working having to convert for people. SI is simple
Only Americans weigh themselves in lbs, has it got so desperate that we have to import them to drive lorries (sorry trucks)?
Actually on a nice western world point of view everyone the Brits, the US, Europe are running out of truck drivers. The pay is poor and the conditions are horrible, hence we import drivers into our nice wealthy countries to pay them badly. The US brought in a law to stop Mexicans driving in the US and it doesn't work, we tried to stop Bulgarians
Lets pay them more, seems fair.
Back on inflation, for the last 2 years or more we have interest rates at SFA to try and keep the economy going, this has meant that the stock market has booooomed and capital is very cheap. Yes we will finally get inflation and then interest rates will curb it. So hold onto your hats for the bumpy ride.
