So Sitting in my lounge watching olympics and a white Transit Van with a checkerboard stripe down the side stops. Instant though was "oh I wonder what the Police want" 2 Guys in Black trousers, Doc Martens, Bullet proof ? vests, white shirts and black ties get out. And yes I though they were police officers. when one turns round I can read "civil enforcement" on the back of his body armour. I start to think " they've sent Bailiffs to collect this money". Anyway they disappear up the road looks like they were after someone else they were only here about 5 minutes before they drove off, which probably means some poor devil has a Bailiff visit charge on the account. Now that is a ripoff :- lets say you owe £500 on top of the court fees they Charge £75 for sending a letter another £235 For a visit another £110 if they come back to remove goods

Is that all they charge, you have personal experience. Now thinking about a few borrowers of mine ,ripping of a few painfill bits of their body would not be to much, in fact a very satisfying ripp off indeed.

nope no experience of them fortunately.
but from what you've written I assume you don't agree with me that fees of over £300 to collect a £500 council tax debt are disproportionate.

So you think that they should just be let off with then I assume? God help the countries coffers if you ever got in charge. Your neighbours have obviously been ignoring whatever bill they owe for otherwise it wouldn't have got this far. How much do you think is worthwhile sending the baliffs in for?

Interesting question.
You need two baliffs You need a van You need at least one phone Lets assume you are paying say £15 per hour for these guys which probably makes £20 by the time you add in management costs You don't know how long it will take, you have to travel to and from an office You have to have insurance and training and holidays and sick pay and pensions
You have to add a margin to pay the overheads and make the owner a profit
I'd think £200-300 would be in the right region

I occasionally watch the 'can't pay we'll take it away' series, and one common thread on nearly all of the cases is that the debtor had plenty of advance notice that the sticky brown stuff was about to hit the fan.

Collection costs what it costs, if you don't want to get charged extra pay your bill or at least enter negotiations to pay what you are able to, most companies will try to help if you are genuinely in a difficulty.

Instant though was "oh I wonder what the Police want" 2 Guys in Black trousers, Doc Martens, Bullet proof ? vests They'll be stab vests. How much would you want paying to do a job where you thought there was a reasonable chance of being stabbed? Remember that they cannot legally enforce debts that haven't been through a court. So, boo hoo. People should perhaps pay what they owe. In the unlikely event the debt this thread is about comes before a court, you will not be found liable for it, so that will never ever get to this point.

How much would you want paying to do a job where you thought there was a reasonable chance of being stabbed? Yes, this is very easily overlooked - there are some twisted and evil people out there. I couldn't do the job. For a short while, my dad was a Securicor guard on the money collection vans, working night shifts. As kids, we used to hope and pray he'd return safely in the morning. No way did his wages compensate for the stress my mum endured. I would imagine almost all bailiffs and sheriffs are decent, hard-working folk, earning an honest crust in a very stressful occupation.

yesterday I attended an auction with amongst other stuff stuff that had been seized by bailiffs to pay debts. I was talking to one of the porters and discovered there is a code in that auction house for where stuff comes from. on the lot number sticker a blue dot is police lost property, recovered stolen property they can't find the owner of, or confiscated items ( explains a lot of cordless drills etc without chargers ) a green dot is from a house clearance, a red dot from bailiffs, blank is just general.
Seeing a box of kids toys with a red dot nearly made me cry.
also realised a lot of the time TV's etc with red dots no remote, now I know hiding the remote is pretty petty, but I guess the poor devils don't realise how little a TV with no remote will make, which means the bailiffs likely to return ( can they do that ? ) for more items to clear the debt or do they take enough to guarantee clearing it if possible.

Wow. I'm actually having to tell myself it was probably from an out of business store.

I hope so..
A lot of the other red dots were on Kitchen stuff ( Stainless steel prep tables, commercial Cookers, Freezers etc ) and an awful lot of used fishing equipment.
