I see ‘selection’ being here to refer to schools selecting their pupils. What I don’t understand is how these governments got themselves a comprehensive school system, where the school had to take all within catchment nonselectively, and these schools were either streamed or mixed, or something in between (English and maths in earlier example). And for the parents, on the surface no choice between the school types, just the nearest. Messy. and even with that system the rich win, how they are much more able to buy or rent properties within the catchment of "better" schools As bernythedolt and my parents experienced, back at the end of the 70s concerned parents could try to haggle their children into other 'outside catchment' schools, not by moving house or official procedure, but by using dark arts to get the LEA to make an exception. Although my parents professed typical teacher Socialist values, the socialist ideals of mixed ability classrooms was something they had seen, and the ideals went straight out the window. Interesting, more recent account here. www.newstatesman.com/politics/2017/03/headteacher-i-fear-return-grammars-will-turn-my-school-also-ran

You've previously mentioned your mother was a highly paid senior manager and, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure you've mentioned your private education at a boarding school for a period? You are... Yes I seem to recall that too Berny. Did you go to a comprehensive school Adrian? I could have sworn you said your mother was highly paid too. Which one is wrong I wonder ?

If you thought investing in P2P was a rollercoaster ride, spare a thought for people invested in the Nikkei 225 index in Japan:
- yesterday down 12%
- today up 10%
I'm certain these things never happened when all trades were done on bits of paper.

I am one such person. Thankfully I bought in 2022 and have seen returns >20% since then.

Not sure if this belongs in amused or annoyed www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5ypp032le0oI hate to say it but surely fining these companies all they will do is pass the cost on to consumers, or reduce staff numbers or investment. As an example a year ago I noticed a water leak in the road So I reported it, a week or so later DWR CYMRU came out and fixed it, the next day the flow of water down the road was worse so I reported it and was told we've fixed it, so I explained that water was coming out of the road and was told it happens after a leak it can come up for a few days. A month goes by and I report it again and this time a grew was sent to fix it. A month ago I spotted it leaking again so reported it again, still waiting for it to be fixed. to me repairing the main in the same place 3 times says they are either not fixing the underlying issue or they are bodging it. Last month I saw water running down the road in the entrance to the local Tesco, after 2 weeks I was angry that no-one else had reported it so I reported it, within 24 hours they came out with heavy equipment and spent a day fixing it. I drove past yesterday and it's leaking again. I honestly get the idea they don't really care.

Software development for an intranet used by Rolls Royce engineers working on Britain's nuclear submarines was outsourced to a consultancy who then outsourced it to a Belarussian firm who then used Russian staff...

The souper diet NHS programme. The MSM has been praised the wonderful results for the soup and shake diet, yet the programme is only eligible for people aged 18-65, and not sharing the wonderful recipe and programme online, or might be I am the only one having trouble understanding what exactly is the soup and shake programme. If it works so well, why don’t they just share the information www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(24)00194-3/fulltext

To a large degree, I'm pretty damn sure, so is their level of investment they need to make (if not in absolute terms). They do not operate with a free hand (even if they have been allowed to operate with too loose an external hand on their operations). This stuff is all covered under their extant 5 year AMP (Asset Management Plan). Each will currently be operating under their agreed AMP7 with AMP8 kicking in FY2025. In Thames case of course, they are at very real risk of going into administration already. But if they do, and the owners end up in a hole for several £bn of debt*, nobody is going to feel sorry for them and new owners will be able to pick it up. (which might end up being the Govt. anyway)

According to MSM, top prosecutors consider charging some rioters with terrorism offences.
If this is true, is our MI5 falling asleep and could not see this coming?
How prepared are we for national threat? The covid test has nothing to do with MI5 but our gov didn’t pass the test with flying colours

😅
Let’s hope they have used all the maths tools available, such as Bayes’ Theorem and AI to minimise our current national threat.
I hope they know. Who knows🤣
