The author of that article (who is worth following on twitter) seems to have later been convinced it was about health rather than a public purge
Also this chap makes a good point
Either way, an interesting meeting. Hang Seng down over 6% today on the back of it...

Mike, thank you for that. I would likely have missed it if not for your follow up.

Mike , thank you for that. I would likely have missed it if not for your follow up. Yeah, because they only like to report BS about power struggles. Where is the "we might have got it wrong" follow up? IF it was his health, then that article speculating on power dominance stuff was rubbish. And yet I imagine most people still go about thinking on balance the news is to report events to us and not to influence us in any way.

no mention there of "power struggle" in relation to Jintao, and plenty of mention of him being "frail" and reporting of the fact that state media reported that he had been ill/not feeling well.

Every Chinese company and citizen is under government control and now one person's control. Chinese plans to infilitrate, spy and steal data from other countries were exposed years ago and now they are paying the price.

I wouldn't have a Huawei phone or router if they were giving them away for free. Just don't trust them.

it is tough expecting a dictatorship to move to a rule of law society without clear reasons to do so.... I'm trying to think of an example. SA moved from a racist dictatorship to a corrupt democracy which is hardly a good sign. Tunisia almost managed it but fouled up.
Stopping corruption and letting go of the reins of power is difficult. While slipping back (Hungary) is so easy.

Could someone suggest why Telent / Marconi couldn’t compete in the UK market then?

The high point behind my house is now home to a 200' mast for 'the policeand military' They moved heaven and hell for the access is tricky . It involved a massive amount of infrastructure too,new pylons etc. It remains completely defunct as Huawei fell from favour (yes ,that was the provider). Local farmer is very happy with their rental, in perpetuity.

There is no green, renewables, carbon reduction, climate change revolution without rare earth metals of which China has a 90% monopoly in processing and slightly less in mining at the moment. This is just one reason China supported Russia with its invasion.
Ukraine potentially has one of the largest future sources of rare earth metal in the world possibly worth trillions. You've guessed it, a large percentage is in the Russian illegally occupied parts of Ukraine.

Could someone suggest why Telent / Marconi couldn’t compete in the UK market then? Price. China subsidises its manufacturing and has its own supply of minerals from Africa via its belt and road project and its own mineral processing industries. For many years China has realised that it can dominate the world economically and that plan is now coming to fruition.

China is run by politicians who are mainly Engineers
UK is run by politicians who are Historians, Economists, Lawyers
people tell me that I shouldn't fixate on first degrees. I just see, competence and incompetence with a strong element of correlation.

You have every right to fixate on first degree subjects. We have far too many graduates who have irrelevant degrees. Look at our NHS . It has to recruit from overseas to get the right people. We have far too many arts graduates because they are easy to teach and require below average lecturers and give maximum profit to the universities. On the other hand to teach nursing and doctors needs highly qualified lecturers and expensive facilities giving a lack of profit to universities. The government must start restricting the quantity of irrelevant degrees that can be taught.
