reading this www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/greedy-labour-council-awards-cabinet-members-45-per-cent-pay-rise/ar-AA18twLC?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=14dd6fd171e149e29048b6e755e1bfcb&ei=14rather made me laugh, even with the 45% rise the cabinet will only be paid £3,000 a year more than all the councillors on my local council receive, and those on my council also receive payment for each meeting attended. Cabinet members here receive substantially more. is it not time that the government set a rate for councillors remuneration, in line with what is set for local Government employees. I should add as someone who worked in Local Government for years, some councillors are very lazy, ie really don't interact with the public, turn up at meetings, never speak and always just vote on the party line. I can remember moving a member onto a new laptop and there were 20,000 unopened emails of which 4,000 were marked important.

LOL yes in one case I know of the route of a bypass was changed, to sandwich a large field between the road and the village that went from agricultural value to multiples of that because of it's position. It was apparently only when someone dug into it ( sorry for the pun ) that it emerged the person owning the land that shot up in value was the head of the planning committee, and leader of the council. And yes he did get sent down

I have a lot of time for councillors, they often do a thankless task with minimum support. That some of them are lazy or on the take, well we didn't elect saints and oversight is an important part of our task.
When people say, I don't do politics, they are really saying, I am too lazy to stand up for myself. I assume they get the local decisions they deserve.
My town recently pushed back firmly on a massive expansion. All it took was effort. The next door town, did not, guess where all the buildings are going?

SOME councillors ...... I have found , in the London Boroughs , that being a councillor is a necessary adjunct to advantage in personal or family business and is accepted as that . Realistically:"If it employs my project ,then its a bonus to the whole community ". e.g. enfielddispatch.co.uk/questions-over-payments-made-by-council-to-cabinet-members-company/

Honestly having worked with the 3 main parties , Conservatives were less inclined to claim expenses etc, and Labour more so. Now that could be that Labour councillors tend to come from a back ground where money is tighter, and Conservatives in my experience tended to be business owners or large scale farmers, so money wasn't an issue. from an IT viewpoint It was Lib Dems and Independents who played the I'm a councillor card

With my parish councillor hat on, I can safely say that the ones I deal with are very variable and absolutely not party-dependent.
The last for our ward was a Tory, and utterly useless. A lot of the time, he was being deputised by the neighbouring ward's Tory, who is excellent. At the last local elections, our ward changed hands (along with the council), and the Indie we've had since has been utterly superb, really proactive, nothing too much trouble. Unfortunately, his wife died last year - while he took a break, another neighbouring Indie stood in. Barely heard a peep from him past saying "hello". Ours is now standing down. My fingers are crossed that whoever replaces him, they stay as good as we've got used to. No candidates announced yet.

Our parish council consists entirely of local farmers and one of their wives . It/they exist to nod through things that will benefit their properties . Should anyone else like to join, perish the thought , they would outnumber them. My greatest joy was when their consortium was outbid on a large tranche of land ,by the local Halal Abertoir. Then last 15years has been spent blocking any advantage to it.

I have been having a few dealings with councillors recently and find some are more proactive than others. Ultimately they are people who have made the effort to do something regardless of if I agree with them or not. Regardless of my political views, the local labour councillor is very pro active where the Tory is useless. Even the Alba party guy was very good but I wouldn't vote for him due to the party policies.

I think it's preposterous that these councillors are getting a 45% pay rise.
Just like tips are factored in with a waiter's job, as travolta has mentioned above, we should consider the chunky backhanders that councillors often receive from people.
A friend of a friend is a councillor works in the planning department of his local authority and he often enjoys generous "incentives" from people to push through their planning applications.
