I don't know where the BBC is going to end up and I'm not certain I'll still be paying my licence fee when they reach there. I know plenty of people who don't pay and SFA is done about the supposedly illegal practice.
They are going to cut 1000 hours of new programming but we've got a video of Prince Charles making cheese in Germany as compensation.
Their news coverage of the Ukraine war is so delayed and neutral it's nothing but support and normalisation for russian aggression and atrocities.
Ironically the only daytime TV show I've ever watched is Here Come the Sherrifs and it's the only one that seems to have been dropped and hasn't had 100's of episodes.

Consider the beeb is a 100 years old national asset and the license fee is just another tax for the pride of the UK.

Yet another aspect of this government deliberately starving everything in the country of money.
They know the price of everything, and the value of nothing.

a lot of the 1000 hours cut is Sport, but they admit in part it's because no major sporting events, no Olympics or commonwealth games, no European Championship or world cup football. I suppose we do have the Rugby World cup. Some coverage could be cut back, for example the Grand National do we need the coverage to start 4-5 hours before the race, the same with the FA cup final. IMHO the BBC does produce some junk, for example the Tuckers plays to stereotypes, and the Great British menu and some others are getting past the sell by date. It could save a lot of money by doing stuff in studios not transporting dozens of people around the world, do we really need a pitch side commentator in Saudi Arabia for football, does the BBC really need to send Clare Balding with 10-12 cases of clothes to cover the Olympics etc etc

If they cut out coverage of the coronation and associated chit-chat that could save a few quid, I imagine. Just an idea.

The BBC sends about 10,000,000 people down to Glastonbury every year to cover an event that has been well past its sell by date for years. They weren't remotely interested when it was any good and had some interesting bands on. They could definitely save money there.

No Beeb presence at all at this year's Hay Festival. It's been shrinking rapidly over the last few years... I suspect covid and escalating prices? I first went in 2001 before it got trendy, stayed in Baskerville house bed and breakfast. Very reasonably priced. The rather haunted looking woman on reception told us the room we had was the inspiration for the story. The ancient peeling wallpaper and masterpiece of a bed had me convinced. Last time we went was about four years ago, the nearest house to rent was what an elderly friend of mine would describe as a tupenny bus ride (apparently meaning a long way) away and eye watering expensive. The festival itself had lost any soul it ever had. Or did you mean the broadcasting presence was shrinking? And yes I did meet Bill for secret talks on my first visit....

Or did you mean the broadcasting presence was shrinking? Yep, I meant the Beeb's presence. My first - 10yrs ago, when we first moved here - there was a big Sky Arts presence, too. The festival itself had indeed got a bit too... corporate and soulless. It shrank a chunk last year and - judging from the site map of this year - it's going to be a LOT smaller... In some ways, it won't be a bad thing, I hope.

Something feels wrong when the salaries of Fiona Bruce and Huw Edwards (and a clutch of others) are equivalent to five MPs each, while Gary Lineker's BBC take amounts to fifteen MPs. Can one football presenter really be worth fifteen MPs? Personally, I just don't see it.

I feel it's always been the case where someone who tells others how to the job or how they are doing the job is always paid more than the person actually doing the job

Can one football presenter really be worth fifteen MPs? Personally, I just don't see it. You should see how much actual footballers get paid. MPs get very well paid indeed - just under 3x the national average salary - but there's no shortage of jobs, and DEFINITELY no shortage of candidates. Basic supply and demand. OTOH, there's very few people who can make a top-tier TV presenting job look as effortlessly easy as the big names do - and the Beeb pay them a LOT less than other channels would pay them if they came onto the market...

Unfortunately for the BBC we all have plenty of choice from other providers who imo offer better viewing. Why cant they raise revenue by having adverts like most other companies?
Some of their presenters are on ridiculous packages, usually paid to there own Ltd cos where they can manipulate tax due.
With youtube, netflix etc etc on offer I cant see the beeb continue to justify the tv licence in the future.
