Suspect many will think its a good idea but I'm not sure. 3pm for the test alert on a Sunday is probably benign for most but for some it would be in the middle of their night (shiftworkers etc). Yes they could wrap their phone in something and move it to another room so why not provide a function to disable it? Then they need to find an alarm clock from somewhere. I'm sure there are plenty of more serious edge cases nobody has thought about until it happens. Then there are more philosophical objections. I don't like the idea that I can't control the device I've bought. And I don't like that the government (or council or water authority?) can cause several loud noises inside my house whenever it choses. I'd say this is another 2-5 points knocked off the government's polling since it affects almost everyone (largely in a negative way). www.gov.uk/alerts

Then presumably it will affect people in a +ve way. By alerting them to a danger. Its rather unlikely i'd suggest that 2 months after the test it would even twitch the dial when it comes to polling.

Ahh I didn't realise you could turn them off - that makes quite a difference. Shame on my device at least, I can't have them silent when in silent mode rather than switched off all together. Maybe putting the phone in "airplane" mode would have the same affect as presumably it can't receive anything when in that mode?

This proves to me that the Government has the ability to do things like control your phone they always claimed they couldn't.

You will not receive alerts if your device is:
turned off or in airplane mode connected to a 2G or 3G network wifi only not compatible

Not sure it 'proves' that any more than the Gov using a television station (and / or the supporting infrastructure) to broadcast a particular programme / message, so that it appears on your TV set, proves that the Gov are controlling your television. They are controlling what is sent and might be received given a matching set of conditions. Why go to the trouble of 'controlling' x-million mobile devices when they can 'control' a far, far lower number of data switching centres and other central parts of the equation. That said, they are of course controlling your phone. And your television. And your toaster.

I'd be more worried about what google, telegram or RT can do to you.
Public information announcements have long been a stalwart of UK communications and have never worried anyone

With so much more of pressing concern to attend to, I can't help placing this alerts initiative into the "fiddling while Rome burns" bucket.

Given that you're likely to receive just this single alert in your entire lifetime, you probably have bigger fish to fry, and may be worrying a bit unduly?

Indeed.my location is off but still get a google summary of where I've been and visited each month. Wants me to review my workplace as I seem to visit a lot! Unless you want to lock yourself away and dont use the internet, drive use a credit card or call anyone ,you are being tracked. I know someone with no passport, withdraws his wages fully in cash and has no cards. I cant imagine his life is very fulfilling. He has never been out of the UK and does nothing much except watch soaps.

Well as I say, if you can disable them then its less of an issue but don't assume you'll only get one alert. I'd put this in the "pointless GDPR pop-up" category of worry. i.e. minor. It could grow though if it starts being misused.

Perhaps it's part of the Project Blue Beam plan, so that they can announce the fake alien invasion when the time comes.
https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/117w62t/ive_put_together_all_factchecked_project_blue/
Whatever it is, I've managed for 58 years without Government emergency warnings so I've turned my emergency alerts on my mobile phone off. If nuclear war happens I'd rather not get a warning as that would no doubt only put me in panic mode andn spoil what last few hours or minutes I had left. Hopefully, I'll be taking my twice daily dog walks along the beach in ignorant bliss if and when that happens and that will be just fine because the sea can take our charred remains away.
For those of you who will receive the warning whilst driving, remember it's an offence to touch your mobile phone even if you're stationery so you'll have to let it ring out until you can pull over somewhere safely and turn your vehicle's engine off or else get somebody else in the vehicle to turn it off for you if it's to hand for them. I foresee lots of RTAs that day ...

It's a joint venture between uk government and B&Q. Sales of white paint and doors to hide under will boom on receipt of a warning text. My preppers order is in. Foil bagged chilli con carne for the next 20 years 😁
