Just had a phone call from a friend. I NEED to send her £150 today.
Why do I need to send her £150 ?
she was saying about 3 months ago that she was struggling to access the jobmatch website on her phone.
I offered to loan her my spare laptop on condition she looked after it, and that she returned it within 12 months when she had chance to save up for her own.
It appears that the screen on my laptop is smashed, because she let her 8 year old daughter take it to her bedroom and she stood on it,
I said that I will collect the laptop and I will get hold of a screen and fit it, but she has to pay the cost.
She called me an uncaring "fatherless person" as I "can easily claim on my house insurance" yeah like I'm going to commit fraud.
I guess that's another friend I've lost because I'm good natured and try to help people.

Yep I trod on my Lenovo a couple of months ago. In a split second, you know what you've done. I'm writing to you on its replacement now. Never struck me to claim on my house insurance. I've never claimed anything on any insurance in my life and I'm 59. I've broken a lot of stuff, but I never thought of doing it because it was always my fault and buying a new one is the punishment. I once paid some guy 200 guilders to get over it when I broke his indicator lens in Amsterdam rather then trouble the insurer, I remember.. I remember I was once outraged when my friend told me his mum, a pillar of the local church, had claimed for losing her camera while on holiday although she hadn't. He didn't seem to find it unusual. "If you paid for insurance, you need to get something back otherwise you'd be losing money".

I remember a friend saying they had broken an expensive glass, so they were keeping the pieces and when they broke a few more of the set they would say there was some sort of accident and claim for them all on insurance. I was amazed, these were people who had (apparently) pots of money, why do this? I really didn't get it.

LOL reminds me that many years ago I was on holiday i was talking to a guy and found out he was an insurance assessor, he said it was not uncommon to get claims for a pair of Raybans and a leather jacket stolen off a beach whilst on holiday. on the glasses etc thing I have a friend ( now sadly deceased ) who would put all his bits of broken crockery in a bag and make a claim every 3-4 years . I know youngsters who claim every year or nearly so for mobile phones on insurance, they too regard it as normal "I pay for insurance to replace my phone, so I'm entitled to claim"

I've been paying each year for other people to replace their phones? I've been a fool. I'll make an admission here, about ten years ago I looked at my house insurance renewal premium, and looked at my house and thought, it doesn't look very inflammable and the dog is a keen woofer. I'll stop paying. That's worked out fine, no fires or burglars. Until I trod on the lenovo.

At one point one of my nieces claimed 4 times in 3 years for broken phones and got a new one each time, and each of those was an upgrade.

I have never.. not once.. claimed on either home insurance or holiday insurance... mainly because the excess is usually more than my loss. cant say the same for motoring insurance.
