So about 18 months ago visited daughter and partner an electrician, who told me of friend who saved scrap copper for his daughters 1st car. As they were talking about having a first child I thought great and nice idea . So I since then I have skip dived and now have so far about 100kg of stripped copper , so what to do . I intend to continue until to feeble or mentally incapable , hope another 10 years at least. 1st grandchild due early September Options 1 Buy premium bonds every time I get to £500 worth. 2 Some sort of isa child thing every time I get sufficient copper to sell. 3 Gather over time a couple of tonne of copper on the bases of in a new electric world, copper as an asset will out perform inflation. Thoughts please. Ps making this unavailable until the child is 18 would be a bit of a bonus and no I do not have the financial puff of most of the forum members here, I think!!

18 months ago, I invested a lump into a Junior Stocks & Shares ISA for my first grandchild, which he'll collect at age 18. Grandparents can't do this in isolation, so I had to set up his account via our daughter and gift the money via her.
Then along came grandson number two. The S&S ISA had lost value in the interim, so I invested for number two the same figure in Premium Bonds, which is something grandparents can purchase directly (although the account can still only be managed by a parent/guardian).
Both investments were slightly fiddlier to establish than anticipated, but I reckon the PB route will probably be the easier for us to add to in future years. If I were starting from scratch today, I'd probably just get PBs now.
Do bear in mind that, however generous you'd like to be for number one, you'll want to treat them equally and will have to find the same figure again for numbers two, three and onwards!
EDIT: Early congratulations... you will love it!

Congratulations!!
I give them £500 of premium bonds . Its becoming pretty expensive as twins are arriving in a few months . (So makes 4 this year).
It HAS TO STOP!!!
The last train I caught out of Paddington stopped after a few yards because someone had just stolen all the copper wire in the signals . It wasn't you was it ?

Nope not me , don't do railways, renewable is my thing. Solar farms are in such remote rural locations hidden behind hedges unseeable from the road and unpowered at night . Those hydraulic battery driven power cable shears are so quiet and powerful as well. . My daughters partner is under pressure to work for a solar farm repair company that mainly replaces missing cable that just seem to have disappeared, read up on it . One farm lost £100000 overnight and another has been hit 5 times.

I too have a copper and brass box into which I throw any plumbing and electrical waste.
Nowhere near your 100kgs but it is a start!
I agree that copper is a beneficiary of today's world and will become more expensive in time but the discovery of one large body of copper ore could up-end your plans, just at the wrong time.
With ~18 years to go, you could sell half the copper every so often and buy a global ETF in a Junior ISA with the funds.
Birthday & Xmas presents would go in there, too.
The downside is that they get their hands on the loot at the age of 18.
Unless you forget to tell them, of course...

I've been told by several grandparents that when the grandkids are in the house they are far mor worried about them injuring themselves than they ever were with their children injuring themselves in similar circumstances.

Parents today seem insane compared to those of the 50's. I'd lined up No1 grandson to ride my neighbour's bombproof shetland pony and he was completely put off by fluttering parents. Said it had 'an evil eye'. Child held on by 2 quivering adults .....Father seemingly forgetting that he had ridden simliar for most of childhood and was jumping by the age of 5. Mother sealed to son's waist. Me :The human race is lost before its started.

MY little grand daughter at 2 an half thinks she can have/demand anything she wants... whoooo she doesnt half get upset when i say no... and then no means no.. but give her 5 minutes of screaming and wailing.. and shes absolutely beautiful. Just like her grandad..
