anyone have any experience of these and any recommendations ? Just had something of reasonable value nicked off the front door step. Unless it was the foxes what got it, but since they came in a pair and fairly heavy, unlikely. Where we are we don't have 'passing traffic' so particularly ********d off. In good old horse and stable door fashion, thinking about doing something around video on front but without going silly.

And I've left out the bit about the OH ending up in A&E, and ultimately the Resus unit, last week. [She's OK]

I have a Ring doorbell (battery version as cant get power to it easily) Upside: Easy to install, comes with everything you need. Easy to setup and operate via a mobile phone. Downside: Have to pay a monthly subscription of £3.49 to store all previuos videos, alerts etc. Would have preferred the option to save locally to my own media server but not possible.
You may want/need a WiFi Chime module if you dont have your mobile with you all the time.(extra cost)

oh so it only rings to you phone unless you buy an add-on ? I hadn't realised that. That monthly subscription is a bit steep. I just "love" this move to subscription services. You are only ever quoted a monthly/annual or perhaps weekly cost. No firm ever quotes you saying: it will cost you "That will be £418 spend over the next 10 years....". Its always "only £3.49 per month".

I've got Ring. I couldn't imagine paying and having to replace/recharge the battery on a regular basis. There was previously a 1970s style ding/dong bell but the wiring was good enough to support a permanent connection.
You don't need to pay any subscription but then you only get "Live". i.e. notification when someone presses the button or moves close to the doorbell. It can be a little laggy too - just a few seconds of lag counts for quite a bit when someone is at your door. I do pay for the history and find it incredibly useful but also bloody annoying having to pay for it without any option to set storage locally.
If its a parcel how do you know for sure it was stolen?

Could it be a billy or nanny instead of a foxy creature? perhaps it's strayed over from another thread ? Go back to the thread you belong in Billy.

useful input/thread, thanks to contributors so far.
Do all Rings only have the single camera, and has that been a problem ? I've managed to find an article reviewing "The best video doorbell thingies not requiring a subscription - 2023" (now I know to look for that). One of the ones it recommends (actually the "top pick") is the Eufy. They also do a dual cam version (not the one the article has mentioned) which basically has one pointing downwards (keeping an eye on your parcels) and the more normal one. Big price difference and so probably wouldn't go down that road but asking....
The Eufy seems to be quite cost effective: the doorbell, plus own storage with integrated charm available for around the £120 level. [The review has noted that there is a bit more of a lag compared with something like the Ring, which is a bit disconcerting]. Still, its the done thing to keep your visitors waiting isn't it ?

The biggest issue we had with the Ring Doorbell was the battery life heat and cold cause it to lose capacity very quickly, as does the use of the motion detect functionality resulting in us having to recharged it every 3-4 weeks not the 6-12months as claimed. With pretty much everything turned off I achieved about 6 months, with the result that we have invested in a standalone CCTV system which can eamil motion detech alerts or push them to motion an app, stores footage and doesn't require subscriptions to do so. Siting the camera to the side allows the monitoring of the doorstep, the door, people approaching the door and our designated safe place. Price wise the two camera cctv system was on a par with a Ring 4 door bell. We still have the Ring doorbell as it is usefull if we are in the garden or the workshop, though I have to say delivery people seen to have an aversion to using it and use the door knocker which can't be heard if you are in the wrong place.

I have a pretty extensive Ring system....spent a vast amount of time researching the best one for my needs and this was it. I chose not to have a video doorbell (I have a side camera/speaker in that location which triggers anyway and has a much better FoV). I think the cellular backup option is essential, simply because if I were a burglar the first thing I'd be doing is cutting any cables. My Wifi glitches occasionally and I can see the backup option kicks in within seconds. For one area the system also doubles up as a fun night wildlife recorder (bit niche, I know). Sirens, extenders, contact sensors, motion sensors, glass monitors...it's all doable - wired obviously slightly longer initial set up but less ongoing maintenance and you can mix and match depending on your set up and preferences. If you go for it make sure you get it on discount and go for the bulk sets if available....

don't forget the court case last year that said recording of the public highway, and shared areas between houses and then storage of those recordings was a breach of the DPA. Indeed my friend who is a DPA expert says even viewing the images in public may be considered a breach as a third party may observe the images on your phone.
I think last years case was made worse by the "offender" using the cameras and recordings to harass the neighbour.

Which cctv system did you go for? I also have a Reolink wired system.

I have an Anker eufy doorbell. Mainly because you don't have to pay subscription to check your video (They're saved on a box plugged in by your router.).
You can add in additional cameras to cover other areas of your house, it has a battery and can be kept charged by your old 9V doorbell wiring (if you have it). No major issues with it, the interface is a little clunky but does the job!
Just last night someone's car alarm went off and I could check it wasn't mine without getting out of bed. Worth every penny!
