"About 14,000 people were unable to vote at May's local elections in England because they didn't have a valid ID. ... The Electoral Commission said the true figure is thought to be higher as some of those who wanted to vote at polling stations might have turned away after reading the requirements at the entrance but were not formally recorded.
Ethnic minorities and unemployed voters were more likely to be turned away, the electoral watchdog found. ... But two separate reports published on Wednesday raise serious concerns.
The LGIU report warns voters will be turned away at the general election, expected next year, because there will not be enough staff to check valid ID and produce Voter Authority Certificates ... "It is still not clear that voter ID brings any benefits to the process" ... The Local Government Association echoed this view, saying council election teams had to rely on help from areas without elections in May and this would not be sustainable at a general election."
This government think that's mission accomplished, then.

One could say bring in ID cards, from what I've seen many of our European neighbours are happy to carry them.
But then you get the backlash from the "freedom" crew of "Voter ID is the thin end of the wedge" and "they" ( the Government / Police etc ) will be demanding we carry an ID card. Again our European neighbours seem happy to do this, in the land of the free no-one even thinks to drive without carrying their driving licence and insurance documents.

What about proxy voting? How many proxy vote can one person cast on the day? Can proxy vote changed without consent?

Sure, but the issue is requiring photo ID for just this one thing. There is almost zero electoral fraud in the UK. www.electoralcommission.org.uk/who-we-are-and-what-we-do/our-views-and-research/our-research/electoral-fraud-dataThe people without photo ID are among the demographics least likely to vote Conservative.

one could argue those least likely to vote Conservative are those most likely to commit Voter Fraud On what basis? Which is why it was a nonsense for Adrian to bring politics into this. The mechanism for voting should be independent from which party you support (if any). Reminds me of a certain type of demographic not being able to divorce the mechanism for voting in referenda from the issue being decided upon.....

It always seemed a bit lax that you could just go into a polling station, give your name and address (in fact I think they gave the address and you confirmed it) and they gave you a ballot paper and crossed you off the list. Could have been anyone voting.

Could have been anyone voting. Of course they also write the number on the ballot paper next to your name. Lol I raised it as an issue at the last election as they were using tablets instead of paper, and the tablets were connected via an open network to a 5G router. The democratic services staff couldn't see it as an issue, the IT security guy I spoke o thought it was appalling, I think in part because they hadn't gone through IT to procure any of the kit.

You're forgetting one minor detail... The voter ID change was an entirely party-political decision, which was not proposed or supported by the politically-independent Electoral Commission. Ever heard of "gerrymandering"?

😅 I certainly don’t stay in the polling station longer than 5 minutes, but I do wonder how many police are actively spotting “ fraud” on election day.
